From 2001 to 2005, the award has been presented in Brussels at the Free and Open source Software Developers ' European Meeting ( FOSDEM ).

The Free Software Foundation's ceremony for the Award for the Advancement of Free Software was held at FOSDEM from 2002 to 2006 ( for the awards for 2001 to 2005 ).

FOSDEM was started under the name OSDEM ( Open Source Developers of Europe Meeting ) by Raphael Bauduin.
