" Yellow Peril " is also the name of a song written and performed by Steely Dan founders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker before the first Steely Dan album, later released on various anthologies such as Becker and Fagen: The Early Years.

Steely Dan was still considered a true “ group ” at the time this, their third album, was released ; in addition to core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, guitarists Jeff “ Skunk ” Baxter and Denny Dias and drummer Jim Hodder ( as well as multi-instrumentalist Victor Feldman ) had appeared on both previous Steely Dan releases along with a host of session aces ; all five appeared on the inside cover of the album, though Hodder was replaced on drums by Jim Gordon and Jeff Porcaro for the recordings ( Hodder did, however, contribute backing vocals to " Parker's Band ").

Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, The Lovin ' Spoonful's John Sebastian, The Beach Boys ' Brian Wilson, The Who's Roger Daltrey, Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, and Michael Nesmith of The Monkees each achieved chart success only once as solo artists, but are all well known for their contributions to music through their respective bands.

* The song " Babylon Sisters " by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen from the Steely Dan album " Gaucho " ( 1980 ) has the refrain " Here come those Santa Ana winds again.

The pair is well known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio, the most extreme example being that Becker and Fagen used at least 42 different studio musicians, 11 engineers, and took over a year to record the tracks that resulted in 1980's Gaucho — an album that contains only seven songs.

Becker and Fagen blamed this on having to rush-record the album between tour dates and the fact that they were not happy with some of the performances on the record.

The album went gold on the strength of " Black Friday " and " Bad Sneakers ", but Becker and Fagen were so dissatisfied with the sound of the album ( caused by a faulty DBX noise reduction system ) that they publicly apologized for it ( on the album's back cover ), and for years refused to even listen to it in its final form.

Becker and Fagen had planned on leaving ABC for Warner Bros. Records and wanted to release the next album on it, but MCA claimed ownership of the material, blocking Fagen and Becker from putting it out on any other label.

In 1986, Fagen and Becker both performed on Zazu, an album by the former model Rosie Vela produced by Gary Katz, marking their first collaboration since the breakup.

This album also showed a return to more self-contained recording sessions: Becker played bass on every track and lead guitar on five tracks while Fagen added piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizers, and percussion on top of his vocals.

The 1986 debut album by Rosie Vela, Zazu, inspired the first collaboration between Fagen and Becker following the disbanding of Steely Dan.

Although he learned to become an entertainer, early on Fagen suffered from severe stage fright which originally prompted Steely Dan producer Gary Katz to hire David Palmer to sing two songs on Steely Dan's debut album Can't Buy a Thrill.

Fagen wrote and co-arranged the track " Lazy Nina " on Greg Phillinganes ' 1984 album Pulse.

Becker and Fagen favor a distinctly soul-influenced style of backing vocals, which after the first few albums were almost always performed by a female chorus ( although Michael McDonald features prominently on several tracks, including the 1975 song " Black Friday " and the 1977 song " Peg ").

Miller soon became a first call session musician, gracing well over 500 albums, a short list of which includes Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Frank Sinatra, Dr. John, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Grover Washington Jr., Donald Fagen, Bill Withers, Chaka Khan, LL Cool J, Me ' shell Ndegé Ocello and Flavio Sala.

The duo, along with a revolving assortment of musicians which included future actor Chevy Chase, formed various groups called The Leather Canary, The Don Fagen Jazz Trio, and the Bad Rock Band.
