It was built mainly to satisfy public demand for creation of a grade-separated right of way for the Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad ( later Long Island Rail Road ) on its way to the South Ferry at the foot of Atlantic Street ( later Atlantic Avenue ), where passengers could catch ferries to Manhattan.

Strongly opposed to the abolitionists who sought to end slavery in the U. S., Booth attended the hanging on December 2, 1859, of abolitionist leader John Brown, who was executed for leading a raid on the Federal armory at Harpers Ferry ( in present-day West Virginia ).

He also had a great interest in ferryboats, at his fiancee's suggestion, their marriage was performed on the Roaring Bull boat, part of the Millersburg Ferry, in the middle of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania.

While in Washington, D. C., to discuss government contracts, and in conjunction with his application for an appointment into the quartermaster department, Stuart heard about John Brown's raid on the U. S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry.
