Radclyffe's prominence in the kingdom was shown by his inclusion among the signatories to the letters patent of 16 June 1553 settling the crown on Lady Jane Grey as Edward's successor ; but he nevertheless won favour with Queen Mary, who employed him in arranging her marriage with Philip II of Spain, and who created him Baron Fitzwalter in August 1553.

The peerage remained in abeyance for 168 years, until it was called out of abeyance in 1924 ( after a petition to the House of Lords ) in favour of Henry Fitzwalter Plumptre, who became the twentieth Baron FitzWalter.

They are first found together in 1203, as co-commanders of the garrison at the major fortress of Vaudreuil in Normandy ; they were responsible for surrendering the castle without a fight to Philip II of France, fatally weakening the English position in northern France, but although popular opinion seems to have blamed them for the capitulation, a royal writ is extant stating that the castle was surrendered at King John's command, and both Saer and Fitzwalter had to endure personal humiliation and heavy ransoms at the hands of the French.

He and Fitzwalter were subsequently among the most committed and prominent supporters of Louis ' candidature for the kingship, against both John and the infant Henry III.

Henry Reymond Fitzwalter " Harry " Keating ( 31 October 1926 – 27 March 2011 ) was an English crime fiction writer most notable for his series of novels featuring Inspector Ghote of the Bombay CID.

The Fitzgeralds of Kildare at this time more or less ruled Ireland, Anthony Willoughby a son of Robert Willoughby, Baron Willoughby of Broke, Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex, the heir of Lord Fitzwalter, Maurice St John ( a favourite nephew of Arthur's grandmother Lady Margaret Beaufort ), and Gruffydd ap Rhys the son of Thomas ap Rhys ( a powerful Welsh nobleman ).

Returning to England from a mission to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in April 1556, Fitzwalter was appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland.

In an Elizabethan play, Anthony Munday made her a pseudonym of Matilda Fitzwalter, the historical daughter of Robert Fitzwalter, who had to flee England because of an attempt to assassinate King John.

Later, as Leoni lay dying in 1746, Lord Fitzwalter sent him a further £ 8 " par charité " He is known to have had a wife, Mary, and two sons, one of whom is " thought " to have been a clerk to the great exponent of Palladianism Matthew Brettingham.

There was some irony in this: the editor of World in Action was Raymond Fitzwalter who earlier, as deputy news editor of the Telegraph & Argus in Bradford, had led an investigation into Poulson's activities, which the newspaper published.

The advowson of St Andrew's was anciently held by the family of FitzWalter to which it probably came from the holding by Robert Fitzwalter ( d. 1235 ) of the office of Constable of Baynard's Castle.

The First Barons ' War ( 1215 – 17 ) was a civil war in the Kingdom of England between a group of rebellious barons, led by Robert Fitzwalter and supported by a French army under the future Louis VIII of France, and King John of England.

A number of burial mounds or tumuli remain, notably Lexden Tumulus in Fitzwalter Road which is reputed to be the burial place of Cunobelinus or Cymbeline, the king of the Catuvellauni.

One man with whom he does seem to have developed a close personal relationship is his cousin, Robert Fitzwalter ( d. 1235 ).

In 1215, when the baronial rebellion broke out, Robert Fitzwalter became the military commander, and the Earl of Winchester joined him, acting as one of the chief negotiators with John ; both cousins were among the 25 guarantors of the Magna Carta.

To assert the cause of the rightful Queen, his daughter Maria da Glória, Pedro sailed from Terceira in the Azores with an expeditionary force consisting of 60 vessels, 7500 men including the Count of Vila Flor, Alexandre Herculano, Almeida Garrett, Joaquim António de Aguiar, José Travassos Valdez and a volunteer British contingent under the command of Colonels George Lloyd Hodges and Charles Shaw and effected a landing at Mindelo on the shores north of Porto.

After the death of the Queen Regent in June and the conclusion of hosilities at Leith by the Treaty of Edinburgh in July, the Scottish Reformation was effected in the Parliament of Scotland in August 1560.

From Scotland he passed into England, and treated with Queen Elizabeth respecting her claims on Calais ( 1559 ), a settlement of which was effected at the congress of Le Cateau-Cambrésis.
