Based on Fordun's account, it was assumed that Malcolm passed most of Macbeth's seventeen year reign in the Kingdom of England at the court of Edward the Confessor.

It is inserted after Fordun's account of the defeat of Simon de Montfort and the punishment of his adherents.

The first documentary reference to a castle at Edinburgh is in John of Fordun's account of the death of King Malcolm III.

However, Fordun's chronicle was not written until the later 14th century, and the near-contemporary account of the life of St Margaret, by Bishop Turgot, makes no mention of a castle.

Andrew of Wyntoun's Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland and John of Fordun's Chronica Gentis Scotorum ( 1385 ) are considered major sources on the Scota legends, alongside Thomas Grey's Scalacronica ( 1362 ).

John of Fordun's work, which survives on its own, was incorporated in the following century into the work of Bower.

Despite the apparently late date, Scottish textual historian Dauvit Broun has shown that Fordun's work in fact consists of two earlier pieces, Gesta Annalia I and Gesta Annalia II, the former written before April 1285 and covering the period from King Máel Coluim mac Donnchada ( Malcolm III, died 1093 ) to 2 February 1285.

Tradition, dating from Fordun's time if not earlier, knew the Pictish stone now called " Glamis 2 " as " King Malcolm's grave stone ".

It has been supposed that he was installed as king by Máel Coluim mac Domnaill to whom Edmund of Wessex had " let " the kingdom of Strathclyde, but again, as with earlier ideas of an appanage, this is probably to overstate the case and to follow John of Fordun's version of history more closely than the facts merit.

There is nothing to link Maelgwn Gwynedd to the Pictish king, Fordun's claim notwithstanding.

Fordun's Chronicle is given as one of Stephens ' references.

John of Fordun's version in the Gesta Annalia appears to suggest a peaceful settlement to the affair, and both Fordun and Hoveden follow the report of the revolt and its ending by stating that the king led an expedition into Galloway where he eventually defeated Fergus, Lord of Galloway and took his son Uchtred as a hostage while Fergus became a monk at Holyrood, dying there in 1161.

John of Fordun's narrative is more verbose.

We are informed that Fordun's patriotic zeal was roused by the removal or destruction of many national records by Edward III of England and that he travelled in England and Ireland, collecting material for his history.

According to the custom of the time, the continuator did not hesitate to interpolate Fordun's portion of the work, with additions of his own, and the whole history thus compiled is known as the Scotichronicon.

The first printed edition of Fordun's work was that of Thomas Gale in his Scriptores quindecim ( vol.

In 1871 and 1872 Fordun's chronicle, in the original Latin and in an English translation, was edited by William F Skene in The Historians of Scotland.

The completed work, in its original form, consisted of sixteen books, of which the first five and a portion of the sixth ( to 1163 ) are Fordun's — or mainly his, for Bower added to them at places.

In the later books, down to the reign of Robert I ( 1371 ), he was aided by Fordun's Gesta Annalia, but from that point to the close the work is original and of contemporary importance, especially for James I, with whose death it ends.

John of Fordun ( IV, ii ) calls Kenneth's father " Alpin son of Achay " ( Alpín son of Eochu ) and has him killed in war with the Picts in 836 ; Andrew of Wyntoun's version mixes Fordun's war with the Picts with the Chronicle version which has him killed in Galloway.
