Within Freehold Borough, Route 33 Business is the original alignment of Route 33 before the bypass was built.

* St. Peter's Episcopal Church ( Freehold Borough, New Jersey ), it was built in 1771 and added to the National Register in 1998.

Twenty houses were built in the decade to 1861, most of them on the Haswell Park estate to the south of the road which was acquired in 1852 by the National Freehold Land Society.

In 1714, John Reid, the first Surveyor General of East Jersey, wanted the county seat located in Freehold Township and thus sold the property to the Board of Chosen Freeholders at a bargain price, what may have been the deciding factor in Freehold's competition with Middletown and Shrewsbury for the site.

What is now Freehold Borough was originally incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 25, 1869, from portions within Freehold Township.

Portions of Freehold Township were taken to form Upper Freehold Township ( c. 1731 ), Millstone Township ( February 28, 1844 ), Jackson Township ( March 6, 1844 ), Atlantic Township ( February 18, 1847 ; now Colts Neck Township ), Marlboro Township ( February 17, 1848 ) and Manalapan Township ( March 9, 1848 ).

Manalapan Township was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 9, 1848, from portions of Freehold Township.

Jackson Township was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 6, 1844, from portions of Dover Township ( now Toms River Township ), Freehold Township and Upper Freehold Township, while the area was still part of Monmouth County, New Jersey.

A year later, on 2 March 1930, a new station was opened, to serve a growing suburban area, and named after the Birkbeck Freehold Lane Society, whose name derived from the Yorkshire philanthropist Dr Birkbeck.

New Jersey Transit bus service connects Freehold with towns along U. S. Route 9, Newark Liberty International Airport and New York City, to Philadelphia ( via transfer in Lakewood ) and to Six Flags Great Adventure located in Jackson Township.
