The route of the freeway was revised in 1972 to head north of Interstate 195 to the Route 18 freeway in Colts Neck Township, intersecting the Route 33 bypass of Freehold Borough.

The highway follows a more inland route through Howell Township, Marlboro Township, Freehold Township, Manalapan Township, Old Bridge, Sayreville and into Perth Amboy.

Among the first European settlers in the area were a group of Scots settled in Freehold Township in about 1682-85, followed several years later by Dutch settlers.

Route 33 bypasses Freehold Borough to the south staying within Freehold Township.

Allentown was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on January 29, 1889, from portions of Upper Freehold Township, based on the results of a referendum held that day.

What is now Colts Neck Township was established by an act of the New Jersey Legislature as Atlantic Township on February 18, 1847, from portions of Freehold Township, Middletown Township and Shrewsbury Township.

The Freehold Regional High School District serves students from Colts Neck Township, Englishtown, Farmingdale, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Howell Township, Manalapan Township and Marlboro Township.
