Because of the invasions, the first Captain General was sent to Fuerteventura, charged with defending the island in the name of the crown.

On the Canary Islands it is found on the islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, the Tindaya mountains, and La Oliva with more on the Los Lobos Island and on Graciosa.

The last volcanic activity in Fuerteventura was between 4, 000 and 5, 000 years ago.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are very close to the African mainland ( 96 km ), and were even closer during the Ice Age of the Quaternary ( 18, 000 years ago, roughly 60 km ).

The climate on Fuerteventura is pleasant throughout the year.

As late as 1975, hunting by fearful locals was limiting the population of T. a. gracilirostris on Fuerteventura.

In the 1830s, it was recorded on Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife and since the 1940s it has reached all the other islands.

It is well possible however that remains of extinct giant forms will eventually be discovered there too, given that the successful introduction of G. stehlini to Fuerteventura suggests a vacant ecological niche was present there.

With addition of mtDNA cytochrome b sequence and nDNA fingerprinting data, it was confirmed that not only the Fuerteventura and Réunion Stonechats are distinct species, but that in addition, the African, Madagascar, European, Siberian and Stejneger's Stonechats are also all separate species.

In 1445 he was chosen guardian of the Franciscan community on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura, where in 1446, the Observantist Franciscans founded the Convent of San Buenaventura.

The economy of Fuerteventura is mainly based on tourism.

* Motocross There are various circuits on the island, including Los Alares in Antigua and Isla de Fuerteventura in Puerto del Rosario municipality.

An annual race called Challenge Fuerteventura is held there on the half ironman distance.

In the Canary Islands, it is common on Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, but more local on Gran Canaria, and rare on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where it has only recently begun breeding.

It is a sedentary resident found only on the island of Fuerteventura where it is known as the Caldereta.

* Tyto alba gracilirostris, Canary Barn-owl – Endemic to the E Canary Islands ( Chinijo Archipelago, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote ; perhaps formerly also on Lobos ).

In current times, rodenticide poisoning is the main threat for the Canary Barn-owl, which in the Chinijo Archipelago is on the verge of disappearance while on Fuerteventura only a few dozen pairs remain overall.

On Tenerife they seem to be not uncommon, while on the other islands, the situation looks about as bleak as on Fuerteventura.

Research published in 2007 found that Blue Tits on the eastern Canary Islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are indistinguishable from those in North Africa and so the subspsecies degener should be regarded as a synonym of ultramarinus.

Tenerife, largest of the islands, additionally has the appropriately-named intermedius, whereas before the modern introductions no large species were known to occur on the two easternmost islands ( Lanzarote and Fuerteventura ).

It also governs the local administrations of Tenerife, La Palma and Fuerteventura as well as having majority control in most of the town councils on the Canary Isles.
