Fur traders first arrived during the late 17th century.

Fur trappers, often working for fur traders, followed nearly all possible streams looking for beaver in the years ( 1812 – 1840 ) the fur trade was active.

Early American activity in the region included Fort William on present day Sauvie Island, the establishment of the Methodist Mission in the Willamette Valley and the Whitman Mission east of the Cascades, a saw mill in the Willamette Valley partly owned by Ewing Young, a grist mill also in the valley built in 1834, the Willamette Cattle Company organized in 1837 to bring over 600 head of cattle to the Willamette Valley, as well as ongoing Maritime Fur Trade vessels.

The community on Mackinac at that time included the military garrison, the main depot of John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company, and the mission.

The municipality included the island of Fur, and covered an area of 171 km².

Fur was an early export to European markets and later exports included lumber, pulpwood, and pit props for Welsh coal mines.

Explorers and scientists crossing the portage included David Thompson, British explorer of Canada and North West Fur Company cartographer, in 1798 ; Zebulon Pike, early explorer of the American west, in 1805 ; Lewis Cass, American general and explorer, in his unsuccessful 1820 search for the source of the Mississippi River ; Henry Schoolcraft, geologist and explorer, who accompanied Cass in 1820 and led an expedition in 1832 to find the Mississippi's source ; Joseph Nicollet, French geographer and cartographer of the Upper Mississippi, in 1836 ; and Laurence Oliphant, a British explorer and writer, in 1854.

The series also included back up stories featuring such characters as Deerdevil ( Daredevil ), Goose Rider ( Ghost Rider ) and the Fantastic Fur ( the Fantastic Four ).

He eventually went on trapping in today's Wyoming and Montana after the expedition, working for Manuel Lisa Missouri Fur Company he had signed on with in 1807.

He then took a job with Manuel Lisa's Missouri Fur Company, and was stationed at Fort Manuel Lisa Trading Post in present-day North Dakota.

In 1809 he joined with Manuel Lisa, Jean Pierre Chouteau and William Clark to found the Missouri Fur Company.

In April 1811, Lisa began a final expedition of the Missouri Fur Company's first three years ; he had two goals: to locate the then-lost fur trader Andrew Henry, and to transport the remaining property from Fort Lisa to St. Louis.

When the Missouri Fur Company was reorganized during the winter of 1811-1812, Lisa became more prominent among its leadership.

American Fur Company partner Robert Stuart led a small group of men back east to report to Astor.

In 1812, Robert Stuart and six companions from the Pacific Fur Company ( the Astorians ) happened to cross the Rockies at this point while trying to avoid Indians further north, on their return to Saint Louis, Missouri from Astoria, Oregon.
