The Songhai are thought to have settled at Gao as early as 800 CE, but did not establish it as the capital until the 11th century, during the reign of Dia Kossoi.

The Wai family, being the largest family, is thought to be the direct descendants of the famous founder general of the Han Dynasty, Han Xin, who purportedly fled there to escape executions ordered by Emperor Gao of Han's empress Empress Lü Zhi.

Senior cadres like Lin Biao and Peng Dehuai expressed their ( admittedly limited ) support only because they thought Gao had Mao's approval.

They would frequently go back home to visit their parents in the cities, and they had money to spend and wore fashionable clothes .” Gao also claimed that during the Revolution, Mao sent his daughter, Li Na, to work on a farm in Jiangxi.

Finally, in October 1935, Mao's army reached Shaanxi province and joined with local Communist forces there, led by Liu Zhidan, Gao Gang, and Xu Haidong, who had already established a Soviet base in northern Shaanxi.

Local curators within the country such as Gao Minglu and critics such as Li Xianting ( 栗宪庭 ) reinforced this promotion of particular brands of painting that had recently emerged, while also spreading the idea of art as a strong social force within Chinese culture.

Someone in the palace who had known him in the past exclaimed, " This is Gao Jianli ".

Li Si and the chief eunuch Zhao Gao conspired to kill Fusu because Fusu's favorite general was Meng Tian, whom they disliked and feared ; Meng Tian's brother, a senior minister, had once punished Zhao Gao.

The human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, often referred to as the ' conscience of China ' and who had previously been arrested and allegedly tortured by the Chinese regime for defending members of the Falun Gong, was abducted by Chinese security agents on 4 February 2009 and has not been seen since.

He attacked Peng and those who shared his political opinions as " imperialists " " bourgeoisie ", and " rightists ", and associated their positions with other Communist leaders who had led failed oppositions to Mao's leadership, including Li Lisan, Wang Ming, Gao Gang, and Rao Shushi.

In fall 497, Emperor Xiaowen created Feng Run to be empress, and when Yuan Ke's mother Consort Gao subsequently died, common belief was that Empress Feng had her secretly poisoned so that she could raise Yuan Ke herself.

Meanwhile, however, in Emperor Xiaowen's absence, Empress Feng had been carrying on an affair with the attendant Gao Pusa ( 高菩薩 ).

In the spring of 225, regional clans including Yong, Gao, Zhu, and Meng had taken control of some cities in the south, so Zhuge Liang led an expedition force to Nanzhong.

In 698, a local official, Li Qianli ( 李千里 ), submitted two young eunuchs to Wu Zetian, who had by that point taken the throne as " emperor ," as tribute ; one was Lishi ( who had not yet taken the name of Gao at this point ), and one was named Jin ' gang ( 金剛 ).

An older eunuch, Gao Yanfu ( 高延福 ), took Lishi as an adoptive son ( and thus had Lishi take his own name of Gao ), and as Gao Yanfu had previously served Wu Zetian's powerful nephew Wu Sansi the Prince of Liang, he had Gao Lishi serve Wu Sansi.

Mobo Gao, writing in The Battle for China's Past: Mao and the Cultural Revolution, asserts that the movement benefited millions of Chinese citizens, particularly agricultural and industrial workers, and sees it as egalitarian and genuinely populist, citing continued Maoist nostalgia in China today as remnants of its positive legacy.

After Zhou and Lin negotiated Stalin's approval, Peng attended a conference in Beijing with Mao, Zhou, and Gao Gang on October 18, and they ordered the first wave of Chinese soldiers — in total more than 260, 000 men — to cross into Korea on the night of October 19.

Peng ( like Lin Biao ) was implicated in passively supporting Gao Gang's effort to replace Liu Shaoqi as the second most powerful person in China in 1953, but then opposed Gao in 1954, once Mao made his own opposition clear.

After the purge of Gao Gang and Rao Shushi in 1954, he had ranked sixth, below Chairman Mao, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Chen Yun.

Trusted by Mao Zedong, Gao was dramatically promoted in the final years of the civil war to become the Party, state and military head of the key Northeast area of China.

Gao met Mao Zedong in 1935 when the Long March ended in Shaanxi.

After the founding of the PRC in 1949, Gao was named one of the six chairmen of the State Council, under Mao Zedong.

These were key posts, especially his control of the SPC at a time where Sino-Soviet relations were very important, and Gao was seen by both Mao and other senior Party members as a very capable Politburo member.

His activities were revealed to Mao by Chen Yun and Deng Xiaoping and the Chairman informed Gao that his actions were out of order.

Mao had a series of private conversations with Gao in late 1952 or early 1953 where it is believed he expressed a degree of dissatisfaction with Liu and Zhou, apparently remarking that they were too cautious in their attitude towards the pace of socialist transformation in China.

The details of what Mao actually told Gao are still unclear.

He was doubtful whether Mao had actually endorsed such suggestions and told Gao that it would be inappropriate for them to discuss such a significant matter.

At a Politburo meeting on 24 December 1953, Mao confronted Gao and gave him a serious warning that his activities were a severe threat to Party unity.

Zhou accused Gao first of setting up an ' independent kingdom ', a reference to Gao's power base in Manchuria ; and second of having ' mixed up right and wrong in Soviet relations ', a hint at Gao's alleged close ties to the USSR ; and finally of ' fabricating Comrade Mao Zedong's words ', as Gao had told others that his plans had Mao's support.

Apparently distraught, Gao made several attempts to talk to Mao but was refused an audience with the Chairman.

It is possible that Mao avoided facing Gao because of the secret talks between the two men that had prompted Gao's attempts to advance his own position.

The Private Life of Chairman Mao was presented as revealing new information about Mao, but as historian Mobo Gao noted, " For those who are familiar with the literature in Chinese, there was in fact very little that was really new in the book when it hit the Western market.

Following this, Gao approached senior Party members and expressed his views regarding Liu and Zhou, making the important point to hint that he had Mao's approval.

By 912, it was said that Gao was beginning to contemplate making Jingnan his own personal possession, and therefore, after receiving approval to do so, added a second layer to Jiangling's city walls to add to its defensive capabilities.

However, he was criticized for not being as thorough as he should have been, and as a result, after his death, hidden subversives under the leadership of the chief eunuch Zhao Gao was able to seized power and used it to restore the old feudal order.

Gao played the Song of Yishui for Jing Ke before the latter embarked on his assassination mission.

Living and writing in France but continuing to write primarily in Chinese, Gao Xingjian became the first Chinese writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000.

* An event in 756 where the occupying rebel An Lushan ordered Sun Xiaozhe to have eighty three princesses, their husbands, and parties of Yang Guozhong and Gao Lishi murdered at Zongren Fang in reprisal for his already executed son An Qingzong.

So the owner asked Gao to play for him and his skillful play won him the heart of the owner.

Qin Shi Huang heard about the event and decided to summon Gao to play for him.

In 1962, Kang used the publication of a novel about Liu Zhidan, a Party member killed in battle against the Kuomintang in 1936, as the basis for reviving the Gao Gang affair, successfully insinuating that the novels ’ publication was an effort by Xi Zhongxun and others to reverse the Party's verdict on Gao.
