In late 1962, the Kitmaster brand was sold by its parent company ( Rosebud Dolls ) to Airfix, who transferred the moulding tools to their own factory ; they re-introduced some of the former Kitmaster range, but the Garratt model was not among them.

Garratt began his engineering career by serving an apprenticeship under John Carter Park, then locomotive superintendent of the North London Railway, from 1879-1882 at the North London Railway Bow works.

It is now used by the Welsh Highland Railway, and is regularly traversed by Garratt locomotives imported from the Alfred County Railway in South Africa.

The first Garratt locomotive constructed was TGR K class for the Tasmanian Government Railways on the western Tasmanian North East Dundas Tramway ; K1 is now preserved on the Welsh Highland Railway together with the last Garratt Beyer Peacock built SAR NGG 16 Class No. 143.

The London Midland and Scottish Railway ( LMS ) Garratt was a class of Garratt 2-6-0 + 0-6-2 steam locomotive designed for heavy freight.

In 2001 he helped to refurbish a 500mm-gauge Garratt for the Southern Fuegian Railway that had been produced in Argentina in 1994.

It proved successful on the line, and was soon joined by the 1909-vintage ' K Class ' 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 Garratt locomotives, with which it worked until the line was closed to locomotives in 1929.

It also carried coal trains from Nottinghamshire, for a while with Garratt locomotives, which would be split at Rowsley for the long climb to Peak Forest.

Samuel Foote wrote for him the part of Jerry Sneak in the Mayor of Garratt.

Notable former retailers include Tesco ( who left in the 1980s ), Sainsbury's ( who moved to a far larger supermarket adjacent to the centre, and which still acts as an anchor retailer for the complex ), Woolworths ( in a unit facing Garratt Lane which was demolished in 2005 ), and Iceland ( who closed in 2009 to make way for redevelopment ).

Construction of a replacement frontage along Garratt Lane was put on hold, due to the economic recession, and plans were scaled down with a revised permission obtained for a smaller development that did not have flats above the retail units.

In the 1960s it supported sixteen Garratt 2-6-6-2 locomotives used for the coal traffic from Yorkshire.

Although it had found early favour in Europe, especially on lightly engineered railways, the Mallet type had generally been superseded by the Garratt locomotive by the mid 1920s, but in the Dutch East Indies, now the Republic of Indonesia, several types and sizes remained in use into the 1980s.

In 1936 Beyer Peacock supplied Iran with four Garratt 2-8-4 + 4-8-2 articulated locomotives ( works numbers 6787 – 6890 ).

After several line up changes since reforming, the group line-up settled as Robert Lloyd ( vocals ), Alan Apperley ( guitar ), ex-Pram drummer Daren Garratt, " teenage guitar sensation " Matt Wood, and Stephen ' The Night ' Lowe ( bass ).
