Gaur are largely confined to evergreen forests or semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, but also occur in deciduous forest areas at the periphery of their range.

Gaur herds are led by an old adult female ( the matriarch ).

Gaur are not as aggressive toward humans as wild Asian water buffaloes.

These motifs are also present in the Firuyyz Shah Mosque in Firuzabad ( c. 1354 ) now in a ruined state, Qila Kuhna Mosque ( c. 1540 ), The Darasbari Mosque in the Southern suburb of the walled city of Gaur, and the Jamali Kamili Mosque built by Sher Shah Suri.

The largest numbers and herds of vulnerable Gaur are found here with the Bandipur National Park and Nagarhole together holding over five thousand Gaur.

Among Gaur brahmana of Haryana, Rajasthan & west Uttar Pradesh, Adi Gaur / Taga ( Tyagi ) brahmans are common. Pachauri, Sanadhya & Paliwal are also Gaur brahmans.

Asian Elephants, Gaur, Bengal tigers, and the Nilgiri Marten ( Martes gwatkinsii ) are some of the species of animals found here.

The vegetation is mostly Tropical evergreen and there are large tracts of Rainforests in the northern and southern parts of the district, which are home to Tiger, Asian elephants, hoolock gibbon, Gaur etc. The forests of Cachar were once rich in wildlife but now vanishing due to human onslaught.

Other mammals, many of which are threatened, include Indochinese Tiger, Clouded Leopard ( Pardofelis nebulosa ), Dhole ( a wild dog ) ( Cuon alpinus ), Gaur ( Bos gaurus ), Banteng ( Bos javanicus ), the disputed Kting Voar ( Pseudonovibos spiralis ), Malayan Sun Bear, Pileated Gibbon ( Hylobates pileatus ), Sumatran Serow ( Capricornis sumatraensis ), Sunda Pangolin and the Tenasserim White-bellied Rat.

Others who were instrumental to the success of this institution are Ashutosh Mukherjee, better known as " Ashu Babu ", Prithwish Kumar Kar, Anjan Das Gupta ( Anjan Babu ), Prof. J. P. Bose, Prof. Biswanath Chatterjee and Gaur Hari Khara.

The diverse eco-systems of Chakrasila present a model habitat diversity and support various mammlian spicies like Tiger, leopard, Golden Langur, Leopard Cat, Gaur, Mongoose, Porcupine, Pangoline, Flying Squirrel, Civet Cat etc.

Other species of wild bovines were also domesticated, namely the wild water buffalo, Gaur, and Banteng.

Gaur habitat is characterized by large, relatively undisturbed forest tracts, hilly terrain below an altitude of, availability of water, and an abundance of forage in the form of grasses, bamboo, shrubs, and trees.

Gaur have also been known to make a whistling snort as an alarm call, and a low, cow-like moo.

Gaur bulls may charge unprovoked, especially during summer, when the heat and parasitic insects make them more short-tempered than usual.

Many Asian Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, vulnerable Sloth Bears, Leopard, tiger and Wild Boars dwell in the forests of Karnataka.
