The city of Gilmer, Texas, was named for him ; Gilmer is Upshur County's county seat.

Up util 1988, Gilmer County was governed by a sole commissioner.

Gilmer County was formed in 1845 from parts of Lewis and Kanawha Counties, and named for Thomas Walker Gilmer, Governor of Virginia from 1840 to 1841.

Gilmer was later a representative in the United States Congress and Secretary of the Navy in President John Tyler's cabinet.

Upshur was killed in the explosion on the USS Princeton along with new United States Secretary of the Navy Thomas Walker Gilmer ( who was the namesake for the county seat of Gilmer ).

It was created on December 3, 1832 and was named for George Rockingham Gilmer.

In 1998, the Student Center was expanded toward Gilmer Street and provided a new 400-seat auditorium and space for exhibitions and offices for student clubs.

George R. Gilmer ( 1790 – 1859 )-Twice Governor

An act of December 3, 1832 divided the Cherokee lands into ten new counties — Cass ( later renamed Bartow ), Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, and Union.

In 1988, Gilmer County changed to a five member board of commissioners who then hired a " county manager " to run day to day operations of the county.

Gilmer is served by the Gilmer Independent School District.

Gilmer first served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1829 – 36, representing Albemarle County.

Men from Gilmer would also join units in neighboring counties.
