During the late 1920s the Spring Glade orchard was the largest cherry orchard west of the Mississippi River.

The town was known as Glade Spring in its infancy.

Glade Spring is a town in Washington County, Virginia, United States.

The original name of Glade Spring derives from the Indian word Passawatami which means " this is the place.

During its first years, the town was called Glade Spring Depot to differentiate it from the community centered around Glade Spring Presbyterian Church, two miles to the southwest on the old stage road, now U. S. Route 11.

The post office was moved from Old Glade to Glade Spring Depot in 1856 due to the arrival of the railroad.

The Civil War slowed down its growth, and local men made up a military unit called The Glade Spring Rifles.

Federal and Confederate troops passed through the town several times, and cannon emplacements can still be seen just outside Glade Spring on the road to Saltville.

With the railroad access, Glade Spring turned into a prime shipping yard for produce, livestock and other local goods.

By the time Glade Spring was incorporated in 1875, there were 31 houses ( three were brick ), six stores, two hotels, and a Masonic Hall.

In the early morning hours of April 28, 2011, an EF-3 tornado hit parts of the Glade Spring area, killing three people and injuring 50 others.

The system that hit Glade Spring was part of the April 25 – 28, 2011 tornado outbreak that caused hundreds of deaths and widespread damage all across the South.

* Glade Spring Middle School was built in 1968 and then modified to meet middle school specifications in 1991.

* William " Grumble " Jones ( 1824 – 1864 ), a Confederate General was born near Glade Spring and is buried in the Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church graveyard.

Prior to that, as early as 1883, music was provided by the " Glade Cornet Band ," an organization made up of townspeople.

The final scenes of the crime novel Pretty Little Things by Jilliane Hoffman take place in a sugarcane plantation near Belle Glade.

Fairfield Glade is not an incorporated municipality, but is managed by the Fairfield Glade Community Club, a homeowner's association.

Some residences in Fairfield Glade are in timeshare ownership and are occupied for short periods by visitors.

Today, the train tracks that once connected Glade to Saltville, are being removed and being replaced by an 8. 91-mile trail called the Salt Trail.

In the 1980s Douglas lent her support to the Florida Rural Legal Services, a group that worked to protect migrant farm workers who were centered around Belle Glade, and who were primarily employed by the sugarcane industry.

Glade Reservoir would be filled by a diversion from the Cache la Poudre River and would store that water for use by these communities.

But these releases into the Poudre from Glade would be entirely offset by water that would normally be released from Horsetooth Reservoir into the Poudre, also upstream of Fort Collins.

After construction is completed the company formed by the consortium will be responsible for the maintenance of the highway from the US-Canada border crossing, to the interchange with Route 2 at River Glade, 15 km west of Moncton.

The final years of the McKenna administration saw an agreement signed with a private consortium called Maritime Road Development Corporation ( led by former provincial Liberal leader and former federal Minister of Transport Douglas Young ) to privately finance and build a toll highway to carry the Trans-Canada Highway ( Route 2 ) in a new alignment from a point west of Fredericton to a point on the existing TCH west of Moncton at River Glade.

The introduction of the 2008 film Der Baader Meinhof Komplex shows Ohnesorg's death ( he is played by Martin Glade ).

Between 500 and 1000, the undecorated, sand-tempered pottery that had been common in the area was replaced by " Belle Glade Plain " pottery.
