The Whig-Radical amalgam could not become a true modern political party, however, while it was dominated by aristocrats, and it was not until the departure of the " Two Terrible Old Men ", Russell and Palmerston, that Gladstone could become the first leader of the modern Liberal Party.

Before that date, however, the Liberal Government of William Ewart Gladstone fell.

Gladstone had not actually been to Southern Italy and therefore some of his accusations were unreliable, however reports of misgovernment in the Two Sicilies were widespread throughout Europe during the 1850s.

Despite its numerical minority, however, the Church of Ireland remained the official state church until it was disestablished on 1 January 1871 by the Liberal government under William Ewart Gladstone.

The following year, however, Gladstone returned to active political life in the campaign against Turkey's Bulgarian Atrocities.

Gladstone by now converted to granting Home Rule, on introducing the first Home Rule Bill 1886 and after a long and fierce debate, made a remarkable Home Rule Speech, beseeching parliament to pass the bill which was however defeated by 341 to 311 votes. The Bill caused serious riots in Belfast during the summer and autumn of 1886 in which many were killed.

Gladstone, however, again obtained a majority in parliament.

He broke with Gladstone, however, over Irish Home Rule, in 1885, and joined the Liberal Unionists.

An alternative definition suggests that the Capricorn Coast extends south to include Gladstone and the towns of Agnes Water and 1770, however the bulk of reference materials refer to that region north of Bundaberg as the Discovery Coast or the Gladstone Region, and that north of Gladstone, the string of seaside communities surrounding Rockhampton and centred upon Yeppoon, is called the Capricorn Coast.

Mr Gladstone, however, in 1869 called him to be Bishop of Salisbury, in which see he kept up the traditions of his predecessors, Bishops Hamilton and Denison, his chief addition being the summoning of a diocesan synod.

Gladstone, who saw little value in the Empire, proposed an anti-Imperialist policy ( later called " Little England "), and cultivated the image of himself ( and the Liberal Party ) as " man of the people " by circulating pictures of himself cutting down great oak trees with an axe as a hobby.

In May 1864 Gladstone said that he saw no reason in principle why all mentally able men could not be enfranchised, but admitted that this would only come about once the working-classes themselves showed more interest in the subject.

Gladstone also ( on 29 November ) criticised what he saw as the Conservative government's profligate spending:

Chamberlain had briefly taken office in the Gladstone government which had been formed in 1886 but resigned when he saw the details of Gladstone's Home Rule plans.

Whereas Social Statics had been the work of a radical democrat who believed in votes for women ( and even for children ) and in the nationalization of the land to break the power of the aristocracy, by the 1880s he had become a staunch opponent of female suffrage and made common cause with the landowners of the Liberty and Property Defence League against what they saw as the drift towards ' socialism ' of elements ( such as Sir William Harcourt ) within the administration of William Ewart Gladstone – largely against the opinions of Gladstone himself.

It was vigorously supported by Sir Rowland Hill, who successfully advocated the penny post, and William Ewart Gladstone, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, who saw it as a cheap way to finance the public debt.

in 1868 Gladstone proposed the Irish Church Resolutions to reunite the Liberal Party for government ( on the issue of disestablishment of the Church of Ireland – this would be done during Gladstone's First Government in 1869 and meant that Irish Roman Catholics did not need to pay their tithes to the Anglican Church of Ireland ).

Gladstone said that the government would withdraw opposition to the Lords ' amendments to the Local Government Bill " under protest " and that it was " a controversy which, when once raised, must go forward to an issue ".

Although the Whigs at first formed the most important part of the coalition, the Whiggish elements of the new party progressively lost influence during the long leadership of the Peelite William Ewart Gladstone, and many of the old Whig aristocrats broke from the party over the issue of Irish home rule in 1886 to help form the Liberal Unionist Party — which itself would merge with the Conservative Party by 1912.

With his party divided, Gladstone prepared to dissolve Parliament on the issue of the House of Lords ' veto, but was compelled to resign in March 1894 by his colleagues, being replaced by Lord Rosebery.

Spencer split from other whiggish aristocratic Liberals in 1866 on the issue of Russell's reform bill, which he supported, and his loyalty was rewarded by his appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland when Gladstone returned to power in 1868.

Also that year, the Boston Critic dedicated a special issue to Lowell on his seventieth birthday to recollections and reminiscences by his friends, including former presidents Hayes and Benjamin Harrison and British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone as well as Alfred Tennyson and Francis Parkman.

Gladstone won the 1868 Election on the issue.

By 1880, Gladstone's dogged focus on the issue had dragged it to the forefront of public attention, and in the general election of 1880, Gladstone toured a series of cities giving speeches of up to five hours on the subject.

The Prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland William Ewart Gladstone had taken up the " Irish Question " in an effort to win the general election of 1868 by uniting the Liberal Party behind this single issue.

From the middle of the 19th century, ongoing attempts were made at Westminster by the Liberal Party under William Ewart Gladstone to resolve the issue by passing the Irish Land Acts.

In 1927, during a court case over published claims that he had had improper relationships with some of these women, the jury unanimously found that the evidence " completely vindicated the high moral character of the late Mr. W. E. Gladstone ".

Gladstone proclaimed that " the expenses of a war are the moral check which it has pleased the Almighty to impose on the ambition and the lust of conquest that are inherent in so many nations ".

Gladstone wrote to Cobden: "... the great aim — the moral and political significance of the act, and its probable and desired fruit in binding the two countries together by interest and affection.

The government's policy was subsequently strongly attacked in the Commons on high moral grounds by Richard Cobden and Gladstone during a censure debate.
