Ælfheah (, " elf-high "; 954 – 19 April 1012 ), officially remembered by the name Alphege within some churches, and also called Elphege, Alfege, or Godwine, was an Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Winchester, later Archbishop of Canterbury.

In 1086 it was in the fee of Gundulf, bishop of Rochester, but in 1066 it had been held from the king as two estates, by two brothers, named Godwine and Alweard.

Harold's sons Godwine and Edmund fled to Ireland and then invaded Devon but were defeated by Brian of Brittany.

Emma Mason suspects that this could also serve as a punishment for Godwine, who had served as a chief supporter of Harold, and was now tasked with the gruesome task.

The other well-known Leofwine was the son of Godwine, with whose family Hereward's father had long been having fights so he is not a likely owner in Bourne.

Siward was, in the words of historian Robin Fleming, " the third man in Cnut's new triumvirate of earls ", the other two being Godwine, Earl of Wessex and Leofwine, Earl of Mercia.

The Bishop of London — the most senior cleric of the church with the exception of the two archbishops — serves as Canterbury's provincial dean, the Bishop of Winchester as chancellor, the Bishop of Lincoln as vice-chancellor, the Bishop of Salisbury as precentor, the Bishop of Worcester as chaplain and the Bishop of Rochester as cross-bearer.

Justus became the first Bishop of Rochester in 604, and attended a church council in Paris in 614.

During his time as a bishop, Mellitus joined with Justus, the Bishop of Rochester, in signing a letter that Laurence wrote to the Celtic bishops urging the Celtic Church to adopt the Roman method of calculating the date of Easter.

The " letters of exhortation " which he is said to have addressed to Mellitus, Archbishop of Canterbury, and to Justus, Bishop of Rochester, are no longer extant, but certain other letters of his have been preserved.

On the same day, the commissioners offered it to Sir Thomas More and John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, who both refused it.
