Under the influence of this work ( and the ideas of Georg Gottfried Gervinus, according to whom " the highest natural object of musical imitation is emotion, and the method of imitating emotion is to mimic speech "), Mussorgsky in 1868 rapidly set the first eleven scenes of Nikolai Gogol's The Marriage ( Zhenitba ), with his priority being to render into music the natural accents and patterns of the play's naturalistic and deliberately humdrum dialogue.

This effectively destroys much of the foundation of Gogol's work by changing the relationship between the false inspector general and members of the town's upper class.

May Night (, Majskaja noch ) is an opera in three acts, four scenes, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov from a libretto by the composer and is based on Nikolai Gogol's story May Night, or the Drowned Maiden, from his collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka.

Based very loosely on Nikolai Gogol's short story " Viy ", the narrative concerns a vampire-witch who is put to death by her own brother, only to return 200 years later to feed on her descendants.

He established from an early stage a reputation as " the best actor of his generation ," giving outstanding performances in classics such as Gogol's " Diary of a Madman " by Nikolai Gogol, " Richard III " by William Shakespeare, " Dom Juan " by Molière, " Enrico IV " by Luigi Pirandello etc.

Among his works are the ballets The Little Hump-backed Horse ( 1955 ), Carmen Suite ( 1967 ), based on the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet ( the project had been turned down by both Shostakovich and Khachaturian ), Anna Karenina ( 1971, on the novel by Leo Tolstoy ), and Lady with a Lapdog ( 1985 ); the operas Not Only Love ( 1961 ), and Dead Souls ( 1976, after Nikolai Gogol's novel ); piano concertos, symphonies, chamber and piano music and other works.

A real hit was Pisemsky's performance as Podkolyosin in Gogol's Marriage featured by one of Moscow's small private theaters.

In Gogol's story The Eve of Ivan Kupala a young man finds the fabulous fern-flower but is cursed by it.

The question arises of the nature of Gogol's comedy, which I would venture to describe as not so much ' comedy of the absurd ' but rather as ' comedy of the absurd situation.
