His sister, Elizabeth Gorham, who married John Leighton, was the ancestor of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt the second wife of Theodore Roosevelt who served as First Lady of the United States during his presidency from 1901 to 1909.

Gorham also served a term as judge of the Middlesex County, Massachusetts Court of Common Pleas.

For several months in 1787, Gorham served as one of the Massachusetts delegates to the United States Constitutional Convention.

Fuller served as one of the co-founders of the Sigma Kappa sorority, along with Mary Caffrey Low Carver, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Frances Elliott Mann Hall and Louise Helen Coburn.

He was the protagonist in the famous Gorham controversy, and held his ground in defeat when Manning seceded to Rome in protest against the verdict of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Gorham's favour.

They also had already played important roles in the Convention: Randolph had presented the Virginia Plan, Rutledge and Wilson had been key in crafting the compromise on representation, Ellsworth had led the small states during the battle over per-state voting in the Senate, and Gorham had chaired the Committee of the Whole, where he called for compromise during the bitter debate over representation.

Gorham also worked on the Republican National Committee for California ( a subsidiary body of the national body, the Republican National Committee ).

In the Gorham controversy of 1850, in the question of Oxford reform in 1854, in the prosecution of some of the writers of Essays and Reviews, especially of Benjamin Jowett, in 1863, in the question as to the reform of the marriage laws from 1849 to the end of his life, in the Farrar controversy as to the meaning of everlasting punishment in 1877, he was always busy with articles, letters, treatises and sermons.

" When later it was discovered that the river actually flowed to the northeast, and the line was re-run in a northeasternly direction from the west end of the southern boundary (" The Second Survey "), it created an 87, 000 acre ( 352 km² ) triangular tract that was not Phelps and Gorhams ' but rather part of lands acquired by Robert Morris when those lands that Phelps and Gorham had not extinguished Indian title reverted back to Massachusetts, and Massachusetts immediately resold them to Morris.

Finally, in 1850, in an article published in the Edinburgh Review in defence of the Gorham judgment he asserted two principles which he maintained to the end of his life — first, " that the so-called supremacy of the Crown in religious matters was in reality nothing else than the supremacy of law, and, secondly, that the Church of England, by the very condition of its being, was not High or Low, but Broad, and had always included and been meant to include, opposite and contradictory opinions on points even more important than those at present under discussion.

Other than Gorham, the committee members had all been lawyers of distinction, and would be leading legal figures in the new government ( Randolph would be the first attorney general, while Rutledge, Ellsworth and Wilson would become Supreme Court justices ).

Gorham would sign the document, although he had openly doubted whether the United States would remain a single, unified nation for more than 150 years.

Notable performances during the campaign came from the men between the posts: The previous seasons keeper David Hills ceased playing early in the season ; for several games a temporary replacement, former 1950's Chelsea goalie, Bob Robertson appeared ; new custodian Brian Gambrill signed-on for £ 300 from Canterbury City and conceded seven goals on his home debut ( in a 7 – 1 loss to Worcester City-David Gillingwater hitting the ' Town's ' lone marker ); mid-season he became injured and for several matches local amateur ' keeper Reg Gorham stepped in ( echoing the make-up of the original Ashford United club he worked for the local free-sheet newspaper ).
