Amos and Andy began as one of the first radio comedy series, written and voiced by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll and originating from station WMAQ in Chicago.

Gosden and Corell instead proposed their own radio serial using characters they created themselves.

Since they had received a favorable response to African American characters they had previously done on radio, Gosden and Correll proposed that the principal characters be African Americans, Sam Smith and Henry Johnson, newly arrived in Chicago from rural Alabama.

WGN retained the rights to the characters and continued Sam ' n ' Henry without Correll and Gosden until February 12th.

Gosden and Correll were white, but played the black lead characters using racially stereotypical speech patterns.

It is a precursor to Gosden and Correll's more popular later program, Amos ' n ' Andy.

One day, while Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll were hard at work at NBC writing their venerable Amos and Andy show, a knock came on the door ; it was Paley himself, with an astonishing offer: " Whatever you are getting now I will give you twice as much.

He was invited by Freeman Gosden to join the cast of the Amos ' n ' Andy radio show as lawyer Gabby Gibson, whom he portrayed from 1944 to 1948.

Charles James Correll ( February 2, 1890 – September 26, 1972 ) was an American radio comedian, best known for his work on the Amos ' n ' Andy show with Freeman S. Gosden.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Amos ' n ' Andy on the air, the broadcast of March 19, 1958 was done by Correll and Gosden using their real voices and calling each other by their real names ; this had never been done on the show before.

From 1928 to 1960, Gosden and Correll broadcast their Amos ' n ' Andy show, which was one of the most famous and popular shows on radio in the 1930s.

Gosden and Correll reworked the premise on a more ambitious scale to create their long-run radio show Amos ' n ' Andy.

After a dispute with the station in 1927, Gosden and Correll took the program's concept and announcer Bill Hay across town to WMAQ and created the first syndicated radio show in history, Amos ' n ' Andy.

The series was an animated remake of Amos ' n ' Andy more or less, " Andy and The Kingfish " and featured the voices of Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll from the radio series ( in fact, several of the original radio scripts by Joe Connelly & Bob Mosher were adapted for this series ).

In 1948, U. S. radio comedians Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll were planning to take their long-running comedy program Amos ' n Andy to television.

Gosden and Correll conducted an extensive national talent search to cast the television version of Amos ' n Andy.

In 1925, Freeman Gosden and Charlie Correll started a comedy show carried by WBT that was a forerunner to Amos and Andy.

In 1926 and 1927, Gosden and Correll also recorded some of their Sam ' n ' Henry routines for Victor Records ( rewritten and shortened to about three minutes ), and in the first two months of 1927, they performed as Sam ' n ' Henry in at least three Chicago theaters.

The main stand, called the Leslie Gosden Stand, is much higher than the rest of the ground and towers above the other stands.

Famous residents of Newmarket include jockey Frankie Dettori and trainers Sir Michael Stoute, John Gosden and Sir Henry Cecil.

Before teaming up with Gosden, he worked as a stenographer and a bricklayer.

Correll died in a Chicago hospital following a heart attack ; at the time of his death he was retired and living in Beverly Hills, California, just a few blocks away from his radio partner, Freeman Gosden.

In 1977, Correll was inducted in the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame along with Gosden.
