Gawler was recalled and replaced by Governor Grey in 1841.

In 1840, Governor Gawler raised a government farm on which sick horses and bullocks from government departments could be agisted.

When George Gawler, South Australia's third Governor, arrived in October 1838, he gave a speech to the local indigenous population through a translator, William Wyatt.

Gawler is the first country town in the state of South Australia, and is named after the second Governor ( British Vice-Regal representative ) of the colony of South Australia, George Gawler.

In 1903, before political parties were a part of British Columbia politics, Lieutenant Governor Henri-Gustave Joly de Lotbinière was the last lieutenant governor in Canada to dismiss from office an incumbent premier, Edward Gawler Prior ; Prior had been found to have given an important construction contract to his own hardware business, though he was later appointed as lieutenant governor himself.

When Governor George Gawler arrived he was appalled at the conditions, saying that security was only being maintained by an " expensive multiplicity of sentries ".

Sensing that the gaol needed its own professional management, Gawler thereupon appointed Ashton to the new position of Governor of the Gaol, effective 1 January 1839, but still answerable to Inman for funding, administration, and staff.

Although Governor Gawler was under orders from the Select Committee on South Australia in Britain not to undertake any public works, in 1840 George Strickland Kingston was commissioned to design a permanent Gaol to hold 140 prisoners.

The original estimate for construction was £ 17, 000 ( 2011 $ 4, 564, 500 ), however in late July 1840, one month after construction began, the plans were altered by Governor George Gawler.

Governor Gawler was summoned back to England to explain his " extravagant " building program.

Adelaide's second Governor was Colonel George Gawler who arrived in October 1838 to a situation of almost no public finances, underpaid officials and 4, 000 immigrants still living in makeshift accommodation.

Despite having been recalled, Governor Gawler had put Adelaide on a firm footing, making South Australia agriculturally self-sufficient, building infrastructure such as the Adelaide Gaol, and restoring public confidence.

Settlers arrived in 1839 and later that year Governor George Gawler proclaimed the area from Cape Catastrophe to the top of Spencer Gulf as a district-the District of Port Lincoln.

The location for a proper port was chosen by Governor George Gawler, between the original settlement and the Governor's preferred location at the junction of the North Arm and the Port River.
