At Biograph, Griffith's career in the film industry would change forever.

In D. W. Griffith's The Avenging Conscience ( 1914 ), the title " The birth of the evil thought " precedes a series of three shots of the protagonist looking at a spider, and ants eating an insect, though at a later point in the film when he prepares to kill someone these shots are cut straight in without explanation.

All this was simple compared to D. W. Griffith's Intolerance ( 1916 ), in which four parallel stories are intercut throughout the whole length of the film, though in this case the stories are more similar than contrasting in their nature.

Peter Bogdanovich's affectionate 1976 film Nickelodeon deals with the turmoil of silent filmmaking in Hollywood during the early 1910s, leading up to the release of D. W. Griffith's 1915 epic The Birth of a Nation.

Intolerance was made partly in response to criticism of Griffith's previous film, The Birth of a Nation ( 1915 ), which was attacked by the NAACP and other groups as perpetuating racial stereotypes and glorifying the Ku Klux Klan.

She was a prominent film star of the 1910s and 1920s, particularly associated with the films of director D. W. Griffith, including her leading role in Griffith's seminal Birth of a Nation ( 1915 ).

The sisters debuted in Griffith's short film An Unseen Enemy ( 1912 ).

The biggest success of these years was D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation ( 1915 ), made for Triangle.

Starting with the mostly original score composed by Joseph Carl Breil for D. W. Griffith's groundbreaking epic The Birth of a Nation ( USA, 1915 ) it became relatively common for the biggest-budgeted films to arrive at the exhibiting theater with original, specially composed scores.

In La Crosse, Wisconsin, a newspaper reviewer called it a " masterpiece " and the " Biggest Spectacle in History of Motion Pictures ," surpassing even D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation :" The photoplay and the spoken drama will be united for the first time in ... the million dollar masterpiece of Thomas H. Ince ... ' Civilization ' is an encyclopedia of the emotions.

It is inevitable to compare such a picture, epic in its scope, including battles and the upheaval of a nation, to a similar picture, Griffith's ' Birth of a Nation.

Often regarded in the context of D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, which had appeared five years earlier, critics have considered Micheaux's project as a response to Griffith.

The climactic battle scenes for D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation were filmed there.

Lillian went on to star in many of Griffith's most acclaimed films, including The Birth of a Nation ( 1915 ), Intolerance ( 1916 ), Broken Blossoms ( 1919 ), Way Down East ( 1920 ) and Orphans of the Storm ( 1921 ).

D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation ( 1915 ), the first great American film, made heroes of the KKK in Reconstruction.

The revival of the Ku Klux Klan was emboldened by the release of D. W. Griffith's Klan-glorifying film The Birth of a Nation, and by the lynching of Leo Frank, who was convicted in the murder of Mary Phagan.

Austin Stoneman, the naive and fanatical congressman in D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, was modeled on Stevens.

As well as all this there was Griffith's habit of moving the action into another shot in an adjoining space, and then back again if it was at all possible, which produced a marked change in background, which also made its small contribution to the discontinuity between shots.

At that time, Crick was not aware of Chargaff's rules and he made little of Griffith's calculations, although it did start him thinking about complementary replication.

Mary Philbin made her screen debut in 1921 and during the 1920s she became a highly successful film actress and starred in a number of high profile films, most notably in D. W. Griffith's 1928 film Drums of Love.
