Gurney took the lead driver role, and the team's first world championship win, while Brabham gave up his car to several other drivers towards the end of the season.

After his death, Teddy Mayer took over effective control of the team ; Hulme continued with Dan Gurney and Peter Gethin partnering him.

Gurney scored two F1 wins with the new Porsche 804, but Porsche retired from F1 anyway at the end of 1962.

Foyt, the two drivers mounted the victory stand and Gurney was handed a magnum of champagne.
