* HDMI lacks VGA compatibility.

In December 2010, Intel, AMD, and several computer and display manufacturers announced they would stop supporting DVI-I, VGA and LVDS-technologies from 2013 / 2015, and instead speed up adoption of DisplayPort and HDMI.

They also stated: " Legacy interfaces such as VGA, DVI and LVDS have not kept pace, and newer standards such as DisplayPort and HDMI clearly provide the best connectivity options moving forward.

DDC2 is not exclusive to the VGA connector, as both DVI and HDMI connectors feature dedicated DDC2B wires.

To achieve EDTV, consumer electronic devices such as a progressive scan DVD player or modern video game consoles must be connected through at least a component video cable ( typically using 3 RCA cables for video ), a VGA connector, or a DVI or HDMI connector.

The Xbox 360 can output 480p via YP < sub > B </ sub > P < sub > R </ sub > component, VGA and HDMI ( newer models only ) cables.

There are HDMI to VGA and DVI to VGA adapters, and VGA to SCART converters.

HDMI / DVI to VGA adapters do not carry the audio channel.

All HTPCs should feature a TV-out option, using either a HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, Component video, VGA ( for some LCD televisions ), S-Video, or Composite video output.

While HDMI and DVI switches have been manufactured, VGA is still the most common video connector found with KVM switches, although many switches are now compatible with DVI connectors.

Other equipment with display functionality includes monitors with more advanced interfaces and connectors giving a better picture, including analog VGA, and digital DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort ; and television ( TV ) receivers which are self-contained, receiving and displaying video RF broadcasts received with an internal tuner.

Devices are available to convert from composite to other standards such as analog VGA or digital HDMI ; such devices may be called upscalers or scan converters, although not all devices with these names will handle composite input.

VGA adapters are powered by the DisplayPort connector, while dual-link DVI adapters may rely on an external power source ( see compatibility with HDMI, DVI and VGA ).

More expensive consumer camcorders generally offer manual exposure control, HDMI output and external audio input, progressive-scan framerates ( 24fps, 25fps, 30fps ), and better lenses than basic models.

Differential pairs are generally used to carry differential or semi-differential signals, such as high-speed digital serial interfaces including LVDS differential ECL, PECL, LVPECL, SATA, Hypertransport, Ethernet over twisted pair, Serial Digital Interface, RS-422, RS-485, USB, Serial ATA, TMDS, FireWire, and HDMI etc.

An HDMI display can be driven by a single-link DVI-D source, since HDMI and DVI-D define an overlapping minimum set of supported resolutions and frame buffer formats.

In the reverse scenario, a DVI monitor that lacks optional support for HDCP might be unable to display protected content, even though it is otherwise compatible with the HDMI source.

However, there can be picture quality degradation when compared to using a DVI or HDMI connection, especially on larger sized LCD / LED monitors or TVs.

Flagged content must be output only to " protected outputs " ( such as DVI and HDMI ports with HDCP encryption ), or in degraded form through analog outputs or digital outputs with visual resolution of 720x480 pixels ( EDTV ) or less.

Note that with the release of the version 1. 4 cable, the HDMI Licensing LLC group ( which oversees the HDMI standard ) will require that any reference to version numbers be removed from all packaging and advertising for the cable.

Non-cable HDMI products starting on January 1, 2012 will no longer be allowed to reference the HDMI number and will be required to state which features of the HDMI specification the product supports.

All future versions of the HDMI specification will be made by the HDMI Forum that was created on October 25, 2011.

Most modern TVs also feature additional inputs for devices such as DVD players, video game consoles, and headphones ; the most common types for analog audio and analog video are RCA ( for composite video and component video ), mini-DIN for S-Video, SCART and D-terminal can be found in Europe and Japan respectively, the newer HDMI ( which can also connect to computers ), USB and Bluetooth.

However, Dolby Digital Live is still useful with HDMI to allow transport of multichannel audio over HDMI to devices that are unable to handle uncompressed multichannel PCM.

Blu-ray Discs are able to hold 1080p HD content, and most movies released on Blu-ray Disc produce a full 1080p HD picture when the player is connected to a 1080p HDTV via an HDMI cable.

As of 2012, most consumer televisions being sold provide 1080p inputs, mainly via HDMI, and supporting full high-def resolutions.

To promote interoperability between DVI and HDMI devices, HDMI source components and displays support DVI signalling.

However, many devices can output HDMI over a DVI output ( examples: ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series video cards ), and some multimedia displays accept HDMI ( including audio ) over a DVI input.

As of 2007, analog inputs were more commonly used than digital, but this changed as flat panel displays with DVI and / or HDMI connections became more widespread.

It also added the availability of HDMI type A connectors for PC sources, the ability for PC sources to only support the sRGB color space while retaining the option to support the YCbCr color space, and required HDMI 1. 2 and later displays to support low-voltage sources.

HDMI 1. 4 requires that 3D displays support the frame packing 3D format at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24.

HDMI 1. 4a requires that 3D displays support the frame packing 3D format at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24, side-by-side horizontal at either 1080i50 or 1080i60, and top-and-bottom at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24.

Likewise, computers also included HDMI ports that carry both audio and video signals to home video displays or AV Receivers.

* As an inherently digital device, the LCD can natively display digital data from a DVI or HDMI connection without requiring conversion to analog, like a CRT would need.

The necessary analog signals are absent from the HDMI connector.

PlayStation 3 consoles can bitstream DTS over HDMI.

However, Dolby Digital Plus decoders include a mandatory component that directly converts ( without decoding and re-encoding ) the Dolby Digital Plus bitstream to a Dolby Digital bitstream ( operating @ 640kbit / s ) for carriage via legacy S / PDIF connections ( including S / PDIF over HDMI ) to external decoders ( e. g. AVRs, etc .).

The HDMI cables transmit both the video and audio signals over a single cable.
