Kanuri are largely found in Hadejia Emirate, with some traces of Badawa mainly in its Northeastern parts.

The emirate has frequently been at war with the nearby cities of Hadejia, Danzomo, Kano, and Zinder since 1828.

The war with Hadejia continued until the death of Gumel's emir, Abdullahi, in 1872.

Hadejia was once known as Biram, and is referred to as one of the " seven true Hausa states " ( Hausa Bakwai ), because it was ruled by the descendants of the Hausa mythological figure Bayajidda and his second wife, Daurama.

A dam was built on the Hadejia river just upstream from the wetlands for irrigation purposes, completed in 1972, which has also affected flooding.

The city lies near where the Kano and Challawa rivers flowing from the southwest converge to form the Hadejia River, which eventually flows into Lake Chad to the east.

Hadejia – Kafin Hausa River traverses the State from west to east through the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands and empties into the Lake Chad Basin.

Hadejia ( also Hadeja, previously Biram ) is a Hausa town in eastern Jigawa State, northern Nigeria.
