Hillside was incorporated shortly after the appearance of Halley's Comet in 1910, and for that reason, the team nickname of Hillside High School is the " Comets.

Octávio became professor of astronomy at the Escola Politécnica in Bahia and gained popularity after delivering an inspired public lecture in 1910 on Halley's Comet, which propelled him into a career in politics.

The year 1910 saw considerable media interest in the predicted return of Halley's Comet, which reached perihelion on April 20.

The appearance of the Daylight Comet several months earlier therefore came as something of a surprise, and made an extremely strong impression on an expectant public ; when Halley's Comet returned again in 1986, many older people's accounts of having seen it in 1910 clearly referred to the Daylight Comet instead.

For example, " 1P / 1982 U1, 1986 III, 1982i " indicates that for the perihelion in 1986, Halley's Comet was the first period comet known ( designated 1P ) and this apparition was the first seen in " half-month " U ( the first half of November ) in 1982 ( giving 1P / 1982 U1 ); it was the third comet past perihelion in 1986 ( 1986 III ); and it was the ninth comet spotted in 1982 ( provisional designation 1982i ).

In 1456, the year of Halley's next apparition, the Ottoman Empire invaded the Balkans, culminating in the Siege of Belgrade in July of that year.

Halley's apparition of 1456 was also witnessed in Kashmir and depicted in great detail by Śrīvara, a Sanskrit poet and biographer to the Sultans of Kashmir.

Halley's 1986 apparition was the least favorable on record.

On 8 November 1985, Stephen Edberg ( then serving as the Coordinator for Amateur Observations at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory ) and Charles Morris were the first to observe Halley's comet with the naked eye in its 1986 apparition.

The next predicted perihelion of Halley's Comet is 28 July 2061, when it is expected to be better positioned for observation than during the 1985 – 1986 apparition, as it will be on the same side of the Sun as Earth.

Halley's Comet, for example, is usually very bright when it passes through the inner Solar System every seventy-six years, but during its 1986 apparition, its closest approach to Earth was almost the most distant possible.

The Halley Armada is the generally accepted and popularly used name of five space probes sent to examine Halley's Comet during its 1986 sojourn through the inner solar system, connected with apparition " 1P / 1982 U1 ".

This meteorite is believed to have been dislodged from a near-Earth orbit by the passing Halley's Comet.

He is credited by many with first popularizing this form of music in the early 1950s with his group Bill Haley & His Comets ( inspired by Halley's Comet ) and million selling hits such as, " Rock Around the Clock ", " See You Later Alligator ", and " Shake Rattle and Roll ".

The algorithm is first in the class of Householder's methods, succeeded by Halley's method.

Its total mass is not known with certainty, but, assuming that Halley's comet is a suitable prototype for all comets within the outer Oort cloud, the estimated combined mass is ( or roughly five times the mass of the Earth ).

Halley-family comets, named for their prototype, Halley's Comet, are unusual in that while they are short-period comets, it is believed that their ultimate origin lies in the Oort cloud, not in the scattered disc.

The 680m high hill there is named for him and is called Halley's Mount.

Halley's Comet or Comet Halley ( or ), officially designated 1P / Halley, is the best-known of the short-period comets and is visible from Earth every 75 – 76 years.

The missions also provided data which substantially reformed and reconfigured these ideas ; for instance it is now understood that Halley's surface is largely composed of dusty, non-volatile materials, and that only a small portion of it is icy.

Spellings of Edmond Halley's name during his lifetime included Hailey, Haley, Halley, Hawley, and Hawly, so its correct pronunciation is uncertain.

Unusually for an object in the Solar System, Halley's orbit is retrograde ; it orbits the Sun in the opposite direction to the planets, or clockwise from above the Sun's north pole.

Because its orbit comes close to Earth's in two places, Halley's Comet is the parent body of two meteor showers: the Eta Aquariids in early May, and the Orionids in late October.

Periodic comets have an average inclination to the ecliptic of only ten degrees, and an orbital period of just 6. 5 years, so Halley's orbit is atypical.

Halley's Comet has probably been in its current orbit for 16, 000 – 200, 000 years, although it is not possible to numerically integrate its orbit for more than a few tens of apparitions, and close approaches before 837 CE can only be verified from recorded observations.

Despite the vast size of its coma, Halley's nucleus is relatively small: barely 15 kilometers long, 8 kilometers wide and perhaps 8 kilometers thick.

Given the irregular shape of the nucleus, Halley's rotation is likely to be complex.

Halley's albedo, for instance, is about 4 %, meaning that it reflects only 4 % of the sunlight hitting it ; about what one would expect for coal.
