It is a period where some composers still working in the Baroque style flourish, though sometimes thought of as being more of the past than the present — Bach, Handel, and Telemann all composed well beyond the point at which the homophonic style is clearly in the ascendant.

George Frideric Handel used the tune as the theme in the variation piece ' Sarabande ' of his Suite No. 4 in E minor, HWV 429, composed prior to 1720.

Bach was less an inspiration than a mentor for Tippett, who was more drawn to the dramatic flair of Handel.

After the break-up of Handel's Royal Academy in 1728, Senesino sang in Paris ( 1728 ) and Venice ( 1729 ), but was re-engaged by Handel in 1730, singing in four more new operas and in the oratorios Esther, Deborah, and, in its 1732 bilingual version, Acis and Galatea.

It was intended for drama, but the acoustics turned out to be more suitable for opera, and from 1710 to 1745, most operas and some oratorios of George Frederick Handel were premièred at this theatre, which was renamed the King's Theatre at the death of Queen Anne in 1714.
