In 1897, Red Jackson's son, William Harding Jackson ( I ), married Anne ( Davis ) Richardson ( young Bill Jackson's mother ) who was the daughter of James B. Richardson, the eventual Executor of the Belle Meade estate.

His family and supporters threw their support to Roosevelt's old military companion, General Leonard Wood, who was ultimately defeated by Taft supporter Warren G. Harding.

Warren Gamaliel Harding ( November 2, 1865 – August 2, 1923 ) was the 29th President of the United States ( 1921 – 1923 ).

A Republican from Ohio, Harding was an influential self-made newspaper publisher.

In 1998, journalist Carl S. Anthony stated Harding was a " modern figure " who embraced technology and culture and who was sensitive to the plights of minorities, women, and labor.

Warren Gamaliel Harding was born November 2, 1865, in Blooming Grove, Ohio.

Nicknamed " Winnie ", he was the eldest of eight children born to Dr. George Tryon Harding, Sr. ( 1843 – 1928 ) and Phoebe Elizabeth ( Dickerson ) Harding ( 1843 – 1910 ).

It was at The Argus where, from the age of 10, Harding learned the basics of the journalism business.

He then raised $ 300, in partnership with others, for the purchase of the failing Marion Daily Star, the weakest of the growing city's three newspapers ; Harding was complete owner of the Star by 1886.

When Harding moved to unseat the Marion Independent as the official daily paper, he was met with strong resistance from local figures, such as Amos Hall Kling, one of Marion's wealthiest real estate speculators.

Florence's father was incensed by his daughter's decision to marry Harding, prohibited his wife from attending the wedding ( she sneaked in long enough to see the vows exchanged ) and refused to speak to his daughter or son-in-law for eight years.

Harding made his foray into politics running for the Marion County Auditor's office, primarily to gain political exposure — his inability to win election was a foregone conclusion in the heavily Democratic county.

Biographer Andrew Sinclair asserts that, like many contemporaries during the days of Ohio Republican Party boss Mark Hanna, Harding was involved with graft and excessive patronage.

As author Rebecca Harding Davis said, he was " the shrewdest of publishers and kindest of men.

According to his memoirs, then-AW head writer Harding Lemay said that Dwyer was fired because she relied too heavily on cue cards and didn't bother memorizing lines, Courtney was fired because her acting was deemed too " soap operatic ," and Reinholt was fired due to the fact that he had openly clashed with both Rauch and Lemay over the direction of the series and had become difficult to deal with.

While on his trip to Alaska in 1923, President Harding asked reporters and Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover, how he should respond to associates who may have betrayed him.

Forbes was very quick after his appointment to have Harding issue executive orders giving him control over veterans ' hospital construction and supplies.

Although Harding desired to run for a second term in office, he may have been aware of his own health decline ; he gave up drinking, sold his " life-work ", the Marion Star, in part to regain $ 170, 000 previous investment losses, and had the U. S. Attorney General Harry Daugherty make a new will.

Harding and John F. Kennedy are the only two presidents to have predeceased their fathers.

Harding's biographer, Samuel H. Adams, concluded that " Warren G. Harding died a natural death which, in any case, could not have been long postponed ".

However, in the 1998 History Channel documentary entitled Ku Klux Klan: A Secret History, the speculation that Harding may have joined the group is highlighted by the fact that William J. Simmons, the founder of the modern Klan, once visited the President at the White House.

Due to his untimely demise, Warren G. Harding is among the relatively few American Presidents who have been honored on a U. S. postage stamp more than the usual two times.
