Harpo was also caricatured in Sock-A-Bye Baby ( 1934 ), an early episode of the Popeye cartoon series created by Fleischer Studios.

The title refers to Silent Bob, a character Smith created and portrayed in his New Jersey films, and is also a likely reference to Harpo Speaks, the autobiography of Harpo Marx.

Groucho glassesIn public and off-camera, Harpo and Chico were difficult to recognize by their fans without their wigs and costumes, but it was almost impossible to recognize Groucho without his trademark eye-glasses, fake eyebrows and mustache.

Groucho was not allowed to join an informal symphonietta of friends, organized by Ben Hecht, that included Harpo because he could only play the mandolin.

* In the Marx Brothers ' 1931 comedy Monkey Business, Harpo joins a live Punch & Judy show ( performed by an uncredited Al Flosso, a famous American Punchman ) while trying to avoid capture by the crew members of the ship he has stowed away on.

" Chico's own piano composition " I'm Daffy Over You " would be played again in their next feature film, Monkey Business, by Harpo on the harp.

The clip is significant because it is the oldest known color footage of the Marx Brothers, and also for an appearance by Harpo without his usual costume and wig.

First released theatrically by Paramount Pictures on November 17, 1933, it starred what were then billed as the " Four Marx Brothers " ( Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo ) and also featured Margaret Dumont, Raquel Torres, Louis Calhern and Edgar Kennedy.

Sylvanian ambassador Trentino ( Louis Calhern ) tries to foment a revolution, woos Mrs. Teasdale, and attempts to dig up dirt on Firefly by sending in spies Chicolini ( Chico Marx ) and Pinky ( Harpo Marx ).

The street vendor confrontations are also well-remembered pieces of physical comedy: Chico and Harpo harass a lemonade seller ( comedy film veteran Edgar Kennedy ), egged on by his irritation that they have stolen his pitch.

Later, Kennedy ( a much larger man ) steals bags of Harpo's peanuts, and Harpo responds by burning Kennedy's new straw boater hat ; in return, Kennedy pushes over their peanut wagon.

Harpo responds by stepping knee-deep into Kennedy's lemonade tank, where he imitates a stereotypical Italian grape-crushing peasant ; this drives off Kennedy's waiting line of customers.

Harpo had changed his name from Adolph to Arthur by 1911.

In A Night in Casablanca, Harpo also " speaks " in the scene where he is taste-testing Groucho's food by acting like a seal and vocalizing seal sounds.

As author Joe Adamson put in his book, Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Sometimes Zeppo, " The president of the college has been shouted down by a mute.

Harpo further distinguished his character by wearing a " fright wig ".

Harpo recorded an album of harp music for RCA Victor ( Harp by Harpo, 1952 ) and two for Mercury Records ( Harpo in Hi-Fi, 1957 ; Harpo at Work, 1958 ).

Also, in the 3 / 14 / 39 episode, Fibber calls him Mr. Sims, but he's having trouble with his memory in this episode, so this may be just an error in remembering, as he also calls Mr. Wilcox " Harpo " for perhaps the first time instead of Harlow, due to poor memory tricks.

His brother Harpo offers a different account in his 1961 autobiography, Harpo Speaks !, claiming ( p. 130 ) that there was a popular trained chimpanzee named Mr. Zippo, and that " Herbie " was tagged with the name " Zippo " because he liked to do chinups and acrobatics, as the chimp did in its act.

In the Marx Brothers film " Room Service ", Groucho, Harpo, and Chico sing over the " dead " body of Mr. Davis and it's sung again at the end of the movie.

Buckley, Al Hirschfeld, Harpo Marx, Russ Meyer, John Kenneth Galbraith, Ralph Bakshi, Shel Silverstein, Hugh Downs, Gene Shalit, Frank Cho, Daniel Clowes and ( reportedly ) even Queen Elizabeth have confessed to being fans of Li ' l Abner.

The turn-of-the-century building that Harpo called " the first real home they ever knew " ( in his memoir Harpo Speaks ) was populated with European immigrants, mostly artisans.

Billed as " The Four Nightingales ", Julius, Milton ( Gummo Marx ), Arthur ( from 1911, originally Adolph ; Harpo Marx ), and another boy singer, Lou Levy, traveled the U. S. vaudeville circuits to little fanfare.

The absurdity of the greasepaint was never discussed on-screen, but in a famous scene in Duck Soup, where both Chicolini ( Chico ) and Pinky ( Harpo ) disguise themselves as Groucho, they are briefly seen applying the greasepaint, implicitly answering any question a viewer might have had about where he got his mustache and eyebrows.

Noticeably frail and sluggish, Groucho took a bow for his deceased brothers, saying, " I wish that Harpo and Chico could be here to share with me this great honor.

Aside from its use in music, the harp occasionally appears in the Marx Brothers ' movies when Harpo plays it.
