The founding members were Patti LaBelle ( formerly Patricia Holt ), Sundray Tucker, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash.

The group went on their own after the end of a tour in 1976 going on to have significant amount of solo success, especially Nona Hendryx, who followed an idiosyncratic muse into her own solo career, which often bordered on the avant-garde and Patti LaBelle, who's enjoyed a very successful Grammy-winning solo career.

It was also notable for the first known compositions by member Nona Hendryx, who co-wrote with LaBelle, the socially conscious " Shades of Difference ".

Though Patti LaBelle and Sarah Dash had some parts in writing some songs for the group, Hendryx would emerge at the end of 1972 as the dominant songwriter of the three.

Sarah Dash wanted the group to record more disco, a genre neither LaBelle nor Hendryx took favorably, despite the fact that " Lady Marmalade " helped to pioneer that particular genre.

Finally during a show in Baltimore on December 13, 1976, according to Patti LaBelle in her memoirs, Don't Block The Blessings, Hendryx snapped.

When LaBelle and Dash found Hendryx, she had suffered a nervous breakdown, tearing up her dressing room.

Feeling the group had reached the end of its rope, LaBelle advised Hendryx and Dash to disband the group, ending it as long as their friendship remained intact.

LaBelle appeared in a couple of albums by Hendryx and Dash attributing background vocals and, in the case of Dash, a duet.

In an interview with the Toronto Star, Patti LaBelle explained why she, Dash and Hendryx waited over 32 years to record a full length album: " You don't want to half-step something this important .... it was about finding the right time and place.

In 1967, Hendryx, LaBelle and Dash were shocked to discover that Birdsong, had secretly joined the Supremes after Florence Ballard was ousted from the group by Motown.

After the release of Moon Shadow, Hendryx became the chief songwriter for most of the group's records while LaBelle and Dash occasionally wrote their own material.

Also present at the ceremony were Patti LaBelle ( performed You Don't Have to Say You Love Me ), Nona Hendryx, Tony Iommi ( Black Sabbath ), Wolfmother ( performed Communication Breakdown ), Jimmy Page ( Led Zeppelin ), Mark Hudson, Lemar, Trevor Nelson, Trevor Francis, Giles Martin, Dermot O ' Leary ( host ), and Paul Gambaccini.

Recorded with lead singer Patti LaBelle and accompanied with backing from bandmates Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, the song's chorus, " Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ( ce soir )?

When time came to record Gonna Take a Miracle, Nyro called up LaBelle, who also brought along her vocal partners in Labelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash.

Much like The Supremes ' Mary Wilson, Dash was often the " middle " of two of the group's extremes, Nona Hendryx and Patti LaBelle, who often had differed in the group's change of direction before LaBelle eventually agreed to " go along with it ".

", where Dash sings most of the song with Hendryx singing in the beginning and LaBelle bringing up the rear near the end of the song.

Dash's strong vocals in the group provided for balance and stability when LaBelle and Hendryx occasionally went off on vocal tangents or were pulling audience members up onto the stage to dance.

Dash sings Lead vocals in the group's political song, " System ", which featured LaBelle and Hendryx singing side by side to Dash in autotone, resurrecting songs that didn't make the final cut from earlier recordings, including Cole Porter's composition, " Miss Otis Regrets " amongst other songs.

Hendryx is known for her work as a solo artist as well as for being one-third of the trio Labelle, who had a hit with " Lady Marmalade.

In the mid-1980s, Hendryx was recruited by RCA to record songs for various soundtracks, including: the theme for Moving Violations ; " I Sweat ( Going Through the Motions )," a commercial hit for Hendryx from the Jamie Lee Curtis film Perfect ; and " Transparent " from the Eddie Murphy vehicle, Coming To America.

In 1995, she reunited with Patti Labelle and Nona Hendryx to record the track " Turn It Out " for the movie soundtrack, " To Woo Fong: Thanks For Everything " garnering a No. 1 dance music hit in the process.

In 1991, 15 years after their last recordings together, the group reunited on Patti LaBelle's Burnin ', recording the funky " Release Yourself ", another Hendryx composition.

Labelle, Dash, and Hendryx all embarked on solo careers ; Wickham stayed on with Hendryx to manage her solo career.

In the beginning of the current decade, Hendryx was asked to appear on two of Paul Haslinger's albums ; two tracks for which she sang lead vocals – " Higher Purpose " and " Beginning to End "-were featured on the soundtrack for the Showtime series Sleeper Cell.

Joyce Kennedy was seen on the international Daughters Of Soul tour along with Sandra St. Victor, Nona Hendryx, Lalah Hathaway ( daughter of Donny Hathaway ), Indira Khan ( daughter of Chaka Khan ), and Simone ( daughter of Nina Simone ).

Approximately 150 policemen surrounded the entire park on horseback and foot to secure the area for the performance, which included Van Zandt, Bono, Springsteen, the Fat Boys, Mötley Crüe, Afrika Bambaataa, Nona Hendryx and many others.

During this period, the group got notice by the mainstream after opening for blue-eyed soul singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and British rock group The Who during their tours, leading up to the 1973 release of Pressure Cookin ', which featured more songwriting from Hendryx and a more unified group effort in which Dash sung co-lead on including the group's memorable ballad, " Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood?

In 1972, the group's second album, Moon Shadow, came out, notably featuring more compositions from Nona Hendryx.

The following year ’ s Gonna Take a Miracle was an album of her favorite " teenage heartbeat songs ", recorded with vocal group Labelle ( Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash ) and the production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

As a songwriter Hendryx subsequently wrote powerful ballads (" You Turn Me On " and " Nightbird " from Nightbirds, " Going Down Makes Me Shiver " from Labelle's final album, Chameleon ), and a wealth of more uptempo numbers (" Space Children ," " Messin ' With My Mind ," " Gypsy Moths ," and " Who's Watching the Watcher ").

In 1977, Hendryx released her first solo album – a self-titled collection.

In 1985, Hendryx wrote and recorded " Rock This House " with Keith Richards, from her album The Heat.

Anderson has also collaborated with William S. Burroughs, Jean Dupuy, Arto Lindsay, Bill Laswell, Ian Ritchie, Peter Gabriel, Perry Hoberman, David Sylvian, Jean Michel Jarre, Brian Eno, Phillip Glass, Nona Hendryx, Bobby McFerrin, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Dave Stewart, Peter Gordon, Adrian Belew, Hector Zazou, and Lou Reed.

Around 1959, Holt and fellow Ordette member Sundray Tucker met and befriended a rival girl group from Trenton, New Jersey, not too far from Philadelphia, named the Del-Capris, which featured friends Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash.

Shortly afterwards, both groups disbanded and the Ordettes ' then-manager Bernard Montague insisted Holt and Tucker join forces with Hendryx and Dash.

That October, the group made history by performing at the Metropolitan Opera House in a concert later billed as " Wear Something Silver ", as the members of Labelle were now wearing silver, metallic wear equipped with feathers and silver platform boots, which later inspired George Clinton to adapt a similar look for his band, Funkadelic, two years later, also adapting the space-age lyrical and musical matter, pioneered by Nona Hendryx and Labelle.

Nona Hendryx, who was in favor of the glam rock image and style, wanted to record more music of that caliber but often found herself in conflict with the label and even her own band mates.

Hendryx was later taken to a hospital for mental evaluation.
