From the mid-1760s a range of Neoclassical modes were fashionable, associated with the British architects Robert Adam, James Gibbs, Sir William Chambers, James Wyatt, George Dance the Younger, Henry Holland and Sir John Soane.

Jackson, Jean-André Deluc, John Wilkinson, John Ash, Samuel More, Robert Bage, James Brindley, Ralph Griffiths, John Roebuck, Thomas Percival, Joseph Black, James Hutton, Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Banks, William Herschel, Daniel Solander, John Warltire, George Fordyce, Alexander Blair, Samuel Parr, Louis Joseph d ' Albert d ' Ailly, the seventh Duke of Chaulnes, Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond, Grossart de Virly ,, Johann Gottling.

The first known sonnets in English, written by Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, used this Italian scheme, as did sonnets by later English poets including John Milton, Thomas Gray, William Wordsworth and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Design reform began with the organisers of the Exhibition itself, Henry Cole ( 1808 – 1882 ), Owen Jones ( 1809 – 1874 ), Matthew Digby Wyatt ( 1820 – 1877 ) and Richard Redgrave ( 1804 – 1888 ).

His mother was Anne Skinner and his father, Henry Wyatt, had been one of Henry VII's Privy Councillors, and remained a trusted adviser when Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509.

Wyatt was not only a poet, but also an ambassador in the service of Henry VIII.

Thomas Warton, the eighteenth century critic, considered Wyatt ' confessedly an inferior ' to his contemporary Henry Howard, and that Wyatt's ' genius was of the moral and didactic species and be deemed the first polished English satirist '.

When she attracted King Henry VIII's attentions sometime around 1525, Wyatt was the last of Anne's other suitors to be ousted by the king.

Elizabeth bore Sir Thomas three sons, Henry ( who died in early infancy ), Francis ( born in 1540 and took the surname of Darrell ), and Edward, who was later executed for his part in the Wyatt's Rebellion of 1554, led by his legitimate half-brother, Sir Thomas Wyatt, the younger. Sir Thomas left Elizabeth properties in Dorset.

His sister Margaret Wyatt was the mother of Henry Lee of Ditchley, from whom descend the Lees of Virginia, including Robert E. Lee.

Dr George Clarke, Henry Keene and James Wyatt were responsible for different stages of its lengthy construction ( 1720 – 91 ), owing to shortage of funds.

Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1536, ownership of the site was transferred to Sir Thomas Wyatt of nearby Allington Castle.

Famous as Jack Oxendine, William Henry Lane became one of the few black performers to join an otherwise white minstrel troupe, and is widely considered to be the most famous forebear of tap dance.
