The third of Herman and Chomsky's five filters relates to the sourcing of mass media news: " The mass media are drawn into a symbiotic relationship with powerful sources of information by economic necessity and reciprocity of interest.

While Richard B. Dier in The Afro-American was " thoroughly disgusted " by the film for being " as vicious a piece of propaganda for white supremacy as Hollywood ever produced ," Herman Hill in The Pittsburgh Courier felt that Song of the South would " prove of inestimable goodwill in the furthering of interracial relations.

Many examples from politics and theology, e. g. the claim that the Roman Emperor was in fact a " god ", demonstrate that this principle was known by effective propagandists from early times, and continues to be applied to this day, e. g. the propaganda model of Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman, which supports the ' big lie ' thesis with more specifics.

The propaganda model is a conceptual model in political economy advanced by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky that states how propaganda, including systemic biases, function in mass media.

Both authors stated they felt the propaganda model is still applicable ( Herman said even more so than when it was introduced ), although they did suggest a few areas where they believe it falls short and needs to be extended in light of recent developments.

As well, Edward Herman has said " critics failed to comprehend that the propaganda model is about how the media work, not how effective they are.

His media criticism has included Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media ( 1988 ), co-written with Edward S. Herman, an analysis articulating the propaganda model theory for examining the media.

Herman has written about the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in articles such as " The Politics of the Srebrenica Massacre ", Herman writes: " the evidence for a massacre, certainly of one in which 8, 000 men and boys were executed, has always been problematic, to say the least " and " The ' Srebrenica massacre ' is the greatest triumph of propaganda to emerge from the Balkan wars ... the link of this propaganda triumph to truth and justice is non-existent ".

Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky proposed a concrete model for the filtering processes ( biases ) of mainstream media, especially in the United States, called the propaganda model.

The propaganda model of Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky argues how corporate media are able to carry out large-scale, successful dehumanization campaigns when that promotes the goals ( profit-making ) that the corporations are contractually obliged to maximise.

Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman have established a propaganda model which purports to explain this bias.

Media critics such as Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky ( 1988 ) have described a propaganda model that they use to show how in practice such a notion of objectivity ends up heavily favoring the viewpoint of government and powerful corporations.

With professor Robert Herman, he also developed the basis of the two fluid model, a traffic model in traffic engineering for urban networks, in parallel to the two fluid model in Classical Statistical Mechanics.

Although the model was based mainly on the characterization of United States media, Chomsky and Herman believe the theory is equally applicable to any country that shares the basic economic structure and organizing principles which the model postulates as the cause of media biases.

In May, 2007, Chomsky and Herman spoke at the University of Windsor in Canada summarizing developments and responding to criticisms related to the model.
