All rings were to be returned to Himmler upon the bearer's death or when they left the SS, to be kept at Wewelsburg as a kind of individual memorial to the holder.

Himmler was known to have a ' Y '- shaped scar on his left cheek, left by an epee ; the corpse had none.

Himmler established his command centre at Schneidemühl, using his special train, Sonderzug Steiermark, as his headquarters.

Broszat criticized Irving's claim that because of one telephone note written by Himmler stating " No liquidation " in regards to a train convoy of German Jews passing through Berlin to Riga ( whom the SS intended to have all shot upon arrival ) on 30 November 1941 that this proved that Hitler did not want to see the Holocaust happen.

In this role, Himmler was still nominally subordinate to Frick, but the de facto power was now in the hands of Himmler, who as Reichsführer-SS, answered only to Hitler.

He answered to Heydrich ; Heydrich answered only to Himmler and Himmler answered only to Hitler.

Thereafter, Himmler and Heydrich took over the political police of state after state ; soon only Prussia was controlled by Göring.

The fact that Himmler was Interior Minister only increased the power of Bormann, as the Gauleiters feared that Himmler, who was General Plenipotentiary for the Administration of the Reich, would curb their power and set up his higher SS and police leaders as their replacement.

He was one of the main architects of the Holocaust during the early war years, answering only to, and taking orders from, Hitler, Göring, and Himmler in all matters that pertained to the deportation, imprisonment, and extermination of Jews.

The only active combat the Russian Liberation Army undertook against the Red Army was by the Oder on 11 April 1945, done largely at the insistence of Himmler as a test of the army's reliability.

By contrast, the Swiss historian Philippe Burrin argues that such a decision was not made before August 1941 at the earliest, pointing to orders given by Himmler on July 30, 1941 to the 2nd SS Cavalry Regiment and the SS Cavalry Brigade operating in the Pripet Marshes in the Pripyat operation calling for the murder of male Jews only while the Jewish women and children were to be driven into the Marshes.

" Müller became a member of the Nazi Party in 1939 for the purely opportunist reason of improving his chances of promotion and only after Himmler insisted he do it.

Until 1942, it was the highest SS rank inferior only to Reichsführer-SS ( Heinrich Himmler ).
