Hippolytus and Basilidians
It was Simon of Cyrene that was crucified ; for Jesus exchanged forms with him on the way, and then, standing unseen opposite in Simon's form, mocked those who did the deed ( this is starkly contradicted by Hippolytus view of the Basilidians ).
When Philaster ( doubtless after Hippolytus ) tells us in his first sentence about Basilides that " he violated the laws of Christian truth by making an outward show and discourse concerning the Law and the Prophets and the Apostles, but believing otherwise ," the reference is probably revealing an antinomian sentiment among the Basilidians.
According to both Hippolytus and Irenaeus, the Basilidians denied that the God of the Jews was the supreme God.

Hippolytus and Gospel
Although many assume that the biblical Mark the Cousin of Barnabas ( Colossians 4: 10 ) is the same as John Mark ( Acts 12: 12, 25 ; 13: 5, 13 ; 15: 37 ) and Mark the Evangelist, the traditionally believed author of the Gospel of Mark, according to Hippolytus of Rome, the three " Mark " s are distinct persons.
Joseph is referenced in apocryphal and non-canonical accounts such as the Acts of Pilate, a text often appended to the medieval Gospel of Nicodemus and The Narrative of Joseph, and mentioned in the works of early church historians such as Irenaeus ( 125 – 189 ), Hippolytus ( 170 – 236 ), Tertullian ( 155 – 222 ) and Eusebius ( 260 – 340 ), who added details not found in the canonical accounts.
This fact, along with the quite different wording Hippolytus uses when apparently quoting it ( see below ), suggests that the Gospel of Thomas " may have circulated in more than one form and passed through several stages of redaction.
The earliest surviving written references to the Gospel of Thomas are found in the writings of Hippolytus of Rome ( c. 222 – 235 ) and Origen of Alexandria ( c. 233 ).

Bart D. Ehrman referred to a work by an early anonymous Christian writer ( perhaps Hippolytus, a Christian leader in Rome around 200 AD ) who in a commentary on the Old Testament book Song of Songs, wrote that Jesus first appeared to the women at the tomb.
