Duchesne and others have viewed the beginning of the Liber Pontificalis up until the biographies of Pope Felix III ( 483 – 492 ) as the work of a single author, who was a contemporary of Pope Anastasius II ( 496-498 ), relying on Catalogus Liberianus, which in turn draws from the papal catalogue of Hippolytus of Rome, and the Leonine Catalogue, which is no longer extant.

A cult grew up around Hippolytus, associated with the cult of Aphrodite.

Hippolytus ( AD 170 – 236 ), considered to have been one of the most learned Christian historians, puts names to the seventy disciples whom Jesus sent forth in Luke 10, includes Aristobulus of Romans 16: 10 with Joseph, and states that he ended up becoming a pastor in Britain.

Many of the earliest Christians who followed the Septuagint calculated creation around 5500 BC, and Christians up to the Middle-Ages continued to use this rough estimate: Clement of Alexandria ( 5592 BC ), Julius Africanus ( 5501 BC ), Eusebius ( 5228 BC ), Jerome ( 5199 BC ) Hippolytus of Rome ( 5500 BC ), Theophilus of Antioch ( 5529 BC ), Sulpicius Severus ( 5469 BC ), Isidore of Seville ( 5336 BC ), Panodorus of Alexandria ( 5493 BC ), Maximus the Confessor ( 5493 BC ), George Syncellus ( 5492 BC ) and Gregory of Tours ( 5500 BC ).

The front of the church is Renaissance-style, in the central relief, Saint Dominic and Hippolytus of Rome are holding up the church.

Before taking up residence in his parish he went abroad again, and in Rome he met Chevalier Bunsen, who afterwards dedicated to him part of his work, Hippolytus and his Age.

As a result, a cult grew up around Hippolytus, associated with the cult of Aphrodite.

Hippolytus said that the measurements of the Ark of the Covenant added up to five and one-half cubits, meaning five and a half thousand years.

Subsequently the theme of worship is taken up by many of the Church Fathers including Justin Martyr, Irenaeus and Hippolytus of Rome ( c. 170-c. 236 ), and seems to be liturgical.

It was Simon of Cyrene that was crucified ; for Jesus exchanged forms with him on the way, and then, standing unseen opposite in Simon's form, mocked those who did the deed ( this is starkly contradicted by Hippolytus view of the Basilidians ).

When Philaster ( doubtless after Hippolytus ) tells us in his first sentence about Basilides that " he violated the laws of Christian truth by making an outward show and discourse concerning the Law and the Prophets and the Apostles, but believing otherwise ," the reference is probably revealing an antinomian sentiment among the Basilidians.

According to both Hippolytus and Irenaeus, the Basilidians denied that the God of the Jews was the supreme God.

Although many assume that the biblical Mark the Cousin of Barnabas ( Colossians 4: 10 ) is the same as John Mark ( Acts 12: 12, 25 ; 13: 5, 13 ; 15: 37 ) and Mark the Evangelist, the traditionally believed author of the Gospel of Mark, according to Hippolytus of Rome, the three " Mark " s are distinct persons.

Joseph is referenced in apocryphal and non-canonical accounts such as the Acts of Pilate, a text often appended to the medieval Gospel of Nicodemus and The Narrative of Joseph, and mentioned in the works of early church historians such as Irenaeus ( 125 – 189 ), Hippolytus ( 170 – 236 ), Tertullian ( 155 – 222 ) and Eusebius ( 260 – 340 ), who added details not found in the canonical accounts.

This fact, along with the quite different wording Hippolytus uses when apparently quoting it ( see below ), suggests that the Gospel of Thomas " may have circulated in more than one form and passed through several stages of redaction.

The earliest surviving written references to the Gospel of Thomas are found in the writings of Hippolytus of Rome ( c. 222 – 235 ) and Origen of Alexandria ( c. 233 ).

Conflict also grew over the issue of the Mosaic law, which Hippolytus states that the Ebionites believed remained in full force ( Refutation of All Heresies 7. 22 ) They are said to have rejected Paul's teachings and used only one Gospel, the Gospel of the Hebrews.

Later references by Hippolytus of Rome and Origen of Alexandria to a Gospel of Thomas are more likely to be referring to this Infancy Gospel than to the wholly different Gospel of Thomas with which it is sometimes confused.

The suppressed Greek Gospel of the Egyptians, ( which is quite distinct from the later, wholly Gnostic Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians ), perhaps written in the second quarter of the 2nd century, was already cited in Clement of Alexandria's miscellany, the Stromata, where quotations give us many of the brief excerpts that are all that remain ; it was also mentioned by Hippolytus, who alludes to " these various changes of the soul, set forth in the Gospel entitled according to the Egyptians " and connects the Gospel of the Egyptians with the Gnostic Naassene sect.

When Zeus struck down Apollo's son Asclepius with a lightning bolt for resurrecting Hippolytus from the dead ( transgressing Themis by stealing Hades's subjects ), Apollo in revenge killed the Cyclopes, who had fashioned the bolt for Zeus.

Hippolytus of Rome ( d. 235 ) is commonly considered to be the earliest antipope, as he headed a separate group within the Church in Rome against Pope Callixtus I. Hippolytus was reconciled to Callixtus's second successor, Pope Pontian, and both he and Pontian are honoured as saints by the Roman Catholic Church with a shared feast day on 13 August.

In some versions, however, Theseus marries Hippolyta and in others, he marries Antiope and she does not die ; by this marriage with the Amazon Theseus had a son Hippolytus.

Most likely one of these two is the biblical Barnabas ; the first one is more likely, because the numbering by Hippolytus seems to indicate a level of significance.

The Latin translation, confirmed by Hippolytus, makes Irenaeus state that according to Cerinthus ( who shows Ebionite influence ), creation was made by a power quite separate from the Supreme God and ignorant of Him.

Callixtus I is elected as the sixteenth pope, but is opposed by the theologian Hippolytus who accuses him of laxity and of being a Modalist, one who denies any distinction between the three persons of the Trinity.

In the seventeenth century, Racine expressed admiration for Sophocles but was more influenced by Euripides ( e. g. Iphigenia at Aulis and Hippolytus were the models for his plays Iphigénie and Phèdre ).

Bart D. Ehrman referred to a work by an early anonymous Christian writer ( perhaps Hippolytus, a Christian leader in Rome around 200 AD ) who in a commentary on the Old Testament book Song of Songs, wrote that Jesus first appeared to the women at the tomb.

His contemporary and enemy, the author of Philosophumena ( probably Hippolytus of Rome ), relates that Callixtus, as a young slave, was put in charge of collected funds by his master Carpophorus, funds which were given as alms by other Christians for the care of widows and orphans ; Callixtus lost the funds and fled from Rome, but was caught near Portus.

Some believe that Hippolytus ' account is of a later, more developed form of Simonianism, and that the original doctrines of the group were simpler, close to the account given by Justin Martyr and Irenaeus ( this account however is also included in Hippolytus ' work ).

Hippolytus says the free love doctrine was held by them in its purest form, and speaks in language similar to that of Irenaeus about the variety of magic arts practiced by the Simonians, and also of their having images of Simon and Helen under the forms of Zeus and Athena.

The earliest attested Christian interpretation of the Song is found in an influential commentary by Hippolytus.

While these two were still in their infancy, Phaedra fell in love with Hippolytus, Theseus's son by Hippolyta.

The curse caused Hippolytus ' horses to be frightened by a sea monster, usually a bull, and drag their rider to his death.

In a version by Seneca, the Roman playwright, entitled Phaedra, after Phaedra told Theseus that Hippolytus had raped her, Theseus killed his son himself, and Phaedra committed suicide out of guilt, for she had not intended for Hippolytus to die.
