" Das Fräulein von Scuderi ", an 1819 short story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, in which Mlle de Scudery establishes the innocence of the police's favorite suspect in the murder of a jeweller, is sometimes cited as the first detective story and a direct influence on Edgar Allan Poe's " The Murders in the Rue Morgue ".

In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of " Das Lied der Deutschen " to Haydn's melody, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time.

August Heinrich Hoffmann ( who called himself Hoffmann von Fallersleben after his home town to distinguish himself from others with the same common name of " Hoffmann ") wrote the text in 1841 on vacation on the North Sea island Heligoland, then a possession of the United Kingdom.

The year after he wrote Das Deutschlandlied, Hoffmann von Fallersleben lost his job as a librarian and professor in Breslau, Prussia, because of this and other revolutionary works, and was forced into hiding until being pardoned after the revolutions of 1848 in the German states.

Aside from Hoffmann and de la Motte Fouqué, three other important authors from the era were Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff ( The Marble Statue, 1819 ), Ludwig Achim von Arnim ( Die Majoratsherren, 1819 ) and Adelbert von Chamisso ( Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte, 1814 ).

The German Christmas carol " Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann ", with words by Hoffmann von Fallersleben, also uses the melody, as does the Hungarian Christmas carol " Hull a pelyhes fehér hó ", the Dutch " Altijd is Kortjakje ziek ", the Spanish " Campanita del Lugar ," and the Turkish " Daha Dun Annemizin.

The Germans were represented officially by Foreign Secretary Richard von Kühlmann, but the most important figure in shaping the peace on the German side was General Max Hoffmann, Chief of Staff of the German armies on the Eastern Front ( Oberkommando-Ostfront ).

( 2 April 1798 – 19 January 1874 ), who used Hoffmann von Fallersleben as his pen name, was a German poet.

Hoffmann was born in Fallersleben ( today it belongs to Wolfsburg ), Brunswick-Lüneburg, then part of the Holy Roman Empire.

Hoffmann von Fallersleben was one of the most popular poets of modern Germany.

As a student of ancient Teutonic literature, Hoffmann von Fallersleben ranks among the most persevering and cultivated of German scholars, some of the chief results of his labors being embodied in his Horae Belgicae, Fundgruben für Geschichte deutscher Sprache und Literatur (" Sources for the History of German Language and Literature "), Altdeutsche Blätter (" Old German Papers "), Spenden zur deutschen Literaturgeschichte und Findlinge.
