In Greek mythology, Achilles (, Akhilleus, ) was a Greek hero of the Trojan War, the central character and the greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad.

He is a character in Greek mythology and is mentioned in Homer's Iliad, and receives full treatment in Roman mythology as the legendary founder of what would become Ancient Rome, most extensively in Virgil's Aeneid.

He is a significant figure in Homer's Iliad and is also mentioned in the Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid.

He plays an important role in Homer's Iliad and in the Epic Cycle, a series of epic poems about the Trojan War.

In Homer's Iliad he is described as of great stature, colossal frame and strongest of all the Achaeans.

In Homer's Iliad, when Alcmene was about to give birth to Heracles, Zeus announced to all the gods that on that day a child, descended from Zeus himself, would be born who would rule all those around him.

The Achaeans (, Akhaioí ) is one of the collective names used for the Greeks in Homer's Iliad ( used 598 times ) and Odyssey.

In Homer's Iliad, the horses of the Myrmidons graze on wild celery that grows in the marshes of Troy, and in Odyssey, there is mention of the meadows of violet and wild celery surrounding the cave of Calypso.

Cerberus featured in many prominent works of Greek and Roman literature, most famously in Virgil's Aeneid, Peisandros of Rhodes ' epic poem the Labours of Hercules, the story of Orpheus in Plato's Symposium, and in Homer's Iliad, which is the only known reference to one of Heracles ' labours which first appeared in a literary source.

The premier examples of its use are Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid.

The other Strife is presumably she who appears in Homer's Iliad Book IV ; equated with Enyo as sister of Ares and so presumably daughter of Zeus and Hera:

His work lent weight to the idea that Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid reflect actual historical events.

From Homer's Odyssey, the Iliad, and some Attic vase paintings, we know that Hephaestus was born of the union of Zeus and Hera.

The importance of this can be seen throughout Greek mythology — in particular, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

A report by the Greek writer Dio Chrysostom ( c. 40-c. 120 CE ) about Homer's poetry being sung even in India seems to imply that the Iliad had been translated into Sanskrit.

In the seventh century BC, Hesiod, both in his Theogony ( briefly, without naming Pandora outright, line 570 ) and in Works and Days, gives the earliest literary version of the Pandora story ; however, there is an older mention of jars or urns containing blessings and evils bestowed upon mankind in Homer's Iliad:

Homer's Iliad describes Greek and Trojan soldiers offering rewards of wealth to enemies who have defeated them on the battlefield in exchange for mercy, but this is not always accepted.

Homer's Iliad mentions another Anchises, a wealthy native of Sicyon in Greece and father of Echepolus.

Homer's Iliad mentions the Tenedos of this era.

" Laurel mentions the book on Homer's works that he holds.

When the film projector stops working, Homer's daughter Lisa mentions that Thomas Edison invented the projector as well as many other inventions.

Homer's " Catalogue of Ships " in the Iliad mentions the cities of Mani: Messi ( Mezapos ), Oetylus ( Oitylo ), Kardamili ( or Skardamoula ), Gerenia, Teuthone ( Kotronas ), and Las ( Passavas ).

The two terms may not have originally been distinguished ; though in Homer's poems nectar is usually the drink and ambrosia the food of the gods ; it was with ambrosia Hera " cleansed all defilement from her lovely flesh ", and with ambrosia Athena prepared Penelope in her sleep, so that when she appeared for the final time before her suitors, the effects of years had been stripped away and they were inflamed with passion at the sight of her.

In Homer's Odyssey, Penelope ( ; ) is the faithful wife of Odysseus, who keeps her suitors at bay in his long absence and is eventually reunited with him.

It was renamed Ulysses, the Latin translation of " Odysseus " at ESA's request in honour not only of Homer's mythological hero but also with reference to Dante's description in Dante's Inferno.

Kydonia was constantly at war with other Cretan city-states such as Aptera, Phalasarna and Polyrrinia and was important enough for the Kydonians to be mentioned in Homer's Odyssey ( iii. 330 ).

In most episodes, he works as the Nuclear Safety Inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, a position he has held since " Homer's Odyssey ", the third episode of the series.

" Mother Simpson " ( season seven, 1995 ) depicts Homer's mother, Mona, as a radical who went into hiding in the mid-1960s following a run-in with the law ; " The Way We Was " ( season two, 1991 ) shows Homer falling in love with Marge Bouvier as a senior at Springfield High School in the 1970s ; and " I Married Marge " ( season three, 1991 ) implies that Marge became pregnant with Bart in 1980.

" He yelled, used corporal punishment, and constantly belittled Homer's attempts to have fun, date, and excel at various activities ," they added.

In the eighth-season episode " The Homer They Fall ", the announcer at Homer's boxing match against Drederick Tatum refers to Fat Tony as Anthony D ' Amico, which he is called later as well, for example, by the FBI.

This flourish is chronologically at odds with Homer's dating of Atë's fall.

Homer's Iliad ( xxiv. 209 ) speaks generally of the Moira, who spins the thread of life for men at their birth ; she is Moira Krataia " powerful Moira " ( xvi. 334 ) or there are several Moirai ( xxiv. 49 ).

A " mythical " people also named Cimmerians are described in Book 11, 14 of Homer's Odyssey as living beyond the Oceanus, in a land of fog and darkness, at the edge of the world and the entrance of Hades.

Her character lies at the center of a dispute between Achilles and Agamemnon that drives the plot of Homer's Iliad.

Homer's Odyssey too makes use of this device ; Odysseus ' adventures at sea are all narrated by the hero himself to the court of king Alcinous in Scheria.

After her son's death, at Corfu she commissioned the building of a palace which she named the Achilleion, after Homer's hero Achilles in The Iliad.

Jazz is a recurring theme, with references abounding in their songs, and there are numerous other film, television and literary references and allusions, such as " Home at Last " ( from Aja ), which was inspired by Homer's Odyssey.

He began as an educator in the service of a noble family at Rome by translating Greek works into Latin, including Homer's Odyssey.

In The Simpsons fifth season's first episode, " Homer's Barbershop Quartet ", Homer Simpson, along with finding an original copy of the U. S. Declaration of Independence, an Action Comics 1, and a Stradivarius violin, all of which he throws away, then comes across a full sheet of Inverted Jennys in the 5 cent box at a local swap meet.

The authors of the book I Can't Believe It's a Bigger and Better Updated Unofficial Simpsons Guide, Warren Martyn and Adrian Wood, called it " A fun episode, with Rodney Dangerfield putting a lot of pathos into Larry – and Homer's impassioned speech atop the cinema at the climax is one of his funniest moments.
