In the seventh century BC, Hesiod, both in his Theogony ( briefly, without naming Pandora outright, line 570 ) and in Works and Days, gives the earliest literary version of the Pandora story ; however, there is an older mention of jars or urns containing blessings and evils bestowed upon mankind in Homer's Iliad:

Homer's physical features are generally not used in other characters ; for example, in the later seasons, no characters other than Homer, Lenny, and Krusty the Clown have a similar beard line.

In Homer's Odyssey, a digression concerning the lineage of Theoclymenus, " a prophet, sprung from Melampus ' line of seers ", sketches the epic narrative concerning Melampus with such brevity that its details must have been familiar to Homer's audience.

But Melampus's own destiny lay in Argos, where he lived and ruled, married and sired a long line, also briefly sketched in Homer's excursus.

Moreover the last line could be imitating an image from Homer's Odyssey ( 5. 482 ), where Odysseus covers himself with leaves though some scholars think the key word might be corrupted.

The noble sentiment of line 1 seems to be original yet the vocabulary is entirely Homeric and, though lines 5 – 7 are adapted from Homer's Iliad ( 13. 130 – 33 ), there is an important difference: Homer describes the advance of one side in close formation, whereas Tyrtaeus describes two sides meeting in the hoplite style of fighting.

Homer's " In America " speech while guarding his sugar pile is a direct reference to one of Tony Montana's lines in Scarface, and his line " Oh what a world!

* Odysseus: The hero of Homer's epic, named in three other plays – he is presented here as a benchmark for spooky bloodlust ( line 1561 ).

When he heard of the death of Tiberius Gracchus, he is said to have quoted the line from the Homer's Odyssey ( i. 47 ), " So may all who engage in such lawless conspiracies perish "; after his return to Rome he was publicly asked by the tribune Gaius Papirius Carbo what he thought of the fate of Gracchus, and replied that he was justly slain.

Homer's line " uh ... Yeah " after being asked if he found the bathroom is one of Jay Kogen's favorite Simpsons jokes.

The first usage of the term phalanx comes from Homer's "( φαλαγξ )", used to describe hoplites fighting in an organized battle line.

Homer's line, " too exciting ", when he sees the lingerie store was written by James L. Brooks.

The Fox censors wrote a note concerning Homer's line, " Bart can kiss my hairy, yellow butt!

Burns also calls the robot that had Homer's brain a " clinking, clattering cacophany of colligenous cogs and camshafts ", similar to the Wizard's line to the Tin Man: " You clinking, clanking, clattering collection of colligenous junk!

Homer's line, " Today, as I leave for Capital City, I consider myself the luckiest mascot on the face of the earth!

" Dawn Taylor of The DVD Journal thought the best line of the episode was Homer's " Marge, this ticket doesn't just give me a seat.

David Mirkin said that Homer's line " Oh I wish, I wish I hadn't killed that fish " is one of his favorites in the show, and that the alternate future in which the family are rich " breaks heart every time ".

Homer's line " close enough " from " Time and Punishment " was later used in the Stargate SG-1 episode " Moebius ".

The ska band named I Voted for Kodos takes its name from Homer's line " Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos ", at the end of " Citizen Kang ".

" A reviewer for DVD. net, on the other hand, thought the best line was Homer's " Oh Lord, be honest – are we the most pathetic family in the universe, or what?

The episode is banned in the People's Republic of China due to its unfavorable reference to Mao Zedong ( Homer's line about how he's like a little angel who killed 50 million people ).

Dawn Taylor of The DVD Journal thought Homer's line to Bart, " I want to share something with you, the three little sentences that will get you through life.

" Homer's Barbershop Quartet " was a hold-over episode from the season four production line.

Oddly enough, however, it is not the headline that attracts Homer's attention: the first letter of each line spells " HOMER ".

Daedalus ' appearance in Homer is in an extended simile, " plainly not Homer's invention ," Robin Lane Fox observes: " he is a point of comparison and so he belongs in stories which Homer's audience already recognized.

" He yelled, used corporal punishment, and constantly belittled Homer's attempts to have fun, date, and excel at various activities ," they added.

In Homer's Iliad, the brothers Agamemnon and Menelaus are dubbed " the Atreides ," or, sons of Atreus.

The episode features the revelation of Homer's middle name, " Jay ," which is a tribute to characters from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show who got their middle initial from Jay Ward.

They point out a mural she painted ( based on an incident at Woodstock where a very young Homer ran around naked in the mud ), which reveals Homer's middle name: " Jay ," which makes no difference to his name's pronunciation.

The episode features the revelation of Homer's middle name, " Jay ," which is a " tribute " to animated characters such as Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocket J. Squirrel from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show who got their middle initial from Jay Ward.

The authors of the book I Can't Believe It's a Bigger and Better Updated Unofficial Simpsons Guide Warren Martyn and Adrian Wood commented that " The idea of Lisa being unpopular in the light of a new girl in the school hallways is not new ( see " Lisa's Rival ") but it is done here with such class ," concluding of Homer's treatment that " this is an episode which shows that even he can find interesting ways to do things.

" They wrote that " The episode remains entertaining simply because of Homer's subplot ," and compared Pinchy to Mojo the Helper Monkey from the season nine episode " Girly Edition " and Stampy the Elephant from the season five episode " Bart Gets an Elephant ", which they considered to be " great ( and brief ) Simpsons pets.

Meanwhile, Homer's wife Marge and their daughter Lisa set out to find the missing parts of " Vincent Price's Egg Magic ," a celebrity-endorsed craft kit.

" They added that Homer's adventure in the sensory deprivation tank was " inspired ," in its " almost Keystone Kop humour as he gets from point A to point B and so on, finally getting back to point A none the wiser.

The decal on Homer's truck reads " Rex Rascal ," a reference to American animator Tex Avery.

Lovejoy puts Homer on a cargo plane to the South Pacific, where he will become a missionary in " Microasia ," despite Homer's lack of religious faith ( to the point he mistakenly calls Jesus " Jebus ").

" Strachan quotes Homer's description of the television program Do Shut Up to Bart: " If they're not having a go with a bird, they're having a row with a wanker ," as one of the funniest moments in the episode.

They highlighted scenes " such as the building of the ' Lucky Savage ' casino and the destruction of Homer's chapel by an earthquake and a river of lava ," but also noted that " Some of the episode's best humor is back in Springfield, after Homer makes Bart the man of the house — as Bart fills in for Homer at the nuclear plant, Mr. Burns berates " Homer " for his poor performance record, gets tired of talking and ends up just poking Bart with a stick.

There's a bunch I really like ," but cited " Bart Sells His Soul " and " Homer's Enemy " as among episodes he loves.

( However, Carter's line " I keep thinking I'm gonna step on a bug and change the future ," may be taken as a reference to The Simpsons, as Homer's stepping on a bug is what caused the changes in his universe.

" While he praised some of Homer's scenes, including " his drunken versions of pop songs ," he maintained that " not much else connects.
