On May 9, 1832, Mack and Hononegah were run out of their trading post by Black Hawk's warriors who were sent there to confiscate Mack's supply of gunpowder.

Hononegah ( c. 1814-1847 ) was the wife of Stephen Mack, Jr. an employee for The American Fur Company, a pioneer to the Rock River Valley in northern Illinois and founder of the community of Rockton, Illinois.

While residing at Grand Detour, Stephen Mack met his wife Hononegah.

Patrick was a cheerleader at Hononegah Community High School in Rockton, IL in 1996 and spent her off time babysitting for a family down the road when she wasn't racing.

Most of what is known about Hononegah is printed in Edson I. Carr's history of Rockton, which was published in 1898.

Hononegah ( from the Winnebago hinu, the designation that she was the eldest daughter of her family, ni, " water ", and-ga which clarifies it's a name.

Hononegah was portrayed by Carr as a Pottawatomie princess and a daughter of a chief.

Mack would have been about 31, while Hononegah was just 15.

At the time Mack was concerned that if he were not legally married to Hononegah that his children would have difficulties inheriting his estate.

There is only a shadowy legend that Mack was sick with fever and that Hononegah nursed him back to health.

The third story preserved by Edson Carr relates that Mack was returning to the village from Chicago when Hononegah met Mack in the woods to warn him not to return to the village.

On 9 May 1832 Mack was run out of his cabin, and he and Hononegah fled to Chicago.

Edson Carr relates a romance in which Mack met Black Hawk, and after the villagers advised Mack that they could not protect him, Mack took refuge on Webber's Island, and Hononegah provided him with food and fresh water daily until the threat was passed.

By a treaty signed in Chicago by the Pottawatomie's on 28 September 1833, Mack received $ 600. 00 on behalf of his three daughters ( supporting the belief that Hononegah was part Pottawatomie ).

He also received an additional $ 5, 000. 00 on behalf of his five children ( supporting the belief that Hononegah was part Winnebago ).

On 14 September 1840 Mack was married to Hononegah by a Justice of the Peace.

It is believed that Mack did not marry Hononegah for love, but to express his gratitude to her for saving his life on so many occasions.

After the death of her father and mother, Hononegah and her sister were raised by her uncles Conosaipkah, Estche-eshesheek, and Horohonkak, and her family moved to Illinois to a Winnebago village on the site of modern day Grand Detour.

On September 14, 1840 Mack and Hononegah were married in Winnebago County, Illinois by William Hulin, Justice of the Peace.

What little that is known about Hononegah comes from reminiscences of early settlers of Pecatonic and later collected and published by Edson Carr.

Mack, Hononegah and one of their sons were buried in a cemetery which is near the present golf course club house and is marked by a boulder with a memorial plaque.

They found their way to a Winnebago village at the present site of Hononegah Forest Preserve between the present Illinois villages of Rockton and Roscoe.

At a Winnebago village at the present site of South Beloit, he learned of another village farther south located at the present site of Hononegah Forest Preserve, however legend says that Mack took the wrong path and ended up some forty miles to the southwest at a Winnebago village at the present site of Grand Detour in Ogle County.

They went up the river into present day Winnebago County and built a cabin in a Winnebago village at the present site of Hononegah Forest Preserve.

The high school's head cheerleader is designated " Princess Hononegah " and performs a dance at most major school events.

In February 1829 Mack purchased Lasallier's cabin, and it is probable that at this time Mack had formalized his relationship with Hononegah.

Hononegah had a strong influence on the Roscoe-Rockton area ; the high school of the four towns and the main thoroughfare connecting the towns are both named after her.

Stephen Mack, Jr., who married the Native American princess named Hononegah, is considered the founder of the Rockton area.

How and when Hononegah met Mack has not survived, only a vague tradition that Mack had become sick from fever and that Hononegah nursed him back to health.

One story indicates that on one occasion Hononegah hid Mack in a barrel, and in another story, Hononegah met Mack in the woods to warn him of a plot to murder him.

At this juncture, there is another romance about how Mack hid out on Webber's Island and that Hononegah brought Mack food and fresh water until Black Hawk's warriors had left, but this story is doubtful.

After the hostilities ended, Mack and Hononegah returned to their trading post.

There are also traditions among some Rockton families that when their ancestors were small boys, they paddled the canoe while Hononegah speared fish.
