The younger men, Vere, and Pembroke, who was also Edward's cousin and whose Lusignan blood gave him the swarthy complexion that caused Edward of Carnarvon's irreverent friend, Piers Gaveston, to nickname him `` Joseph the Jew '', were relatively new to the game of diplomacy, but Pontissara had been on missions to Rome before, and Hotham, a man of great learning, `` jocund in speech, agreeable to meet, of honest religion, and pleasing in the eyes of all '', and an archbishop to boot, was as reliable and experienced as Othon himself.

Governor Hotham, on 16 November 1854, appointed a Royal Commission on Victorian goldfields problems and grievances.

He organised the Governor, Sir Charles Hotham, to lay the foundation stones of University of Melbourne, Melbourne Public Library and Sunbury Industrial School Sunbury Lunatic Asylum in 1854 – all on the same day.

He is the member for the Division of Hotham and, as of June 2012, has spent his entire parliamentary career on the front bench.

The first site, as chosen by Boyle Finniss at Escape Cliffs near the mouth of the Adelaide River, on the coast of Adam Bay on the western side of the Cape Hotham peninsula in 1864, was abandoned in 1867 and a second laid out by Surveyor-General George Goyder near Port Darwin in 1869.

It was thought to be extinct until 1966, when a living specimen was discovered in a ski-hut on Mount Hotham.

Later on a second visit to Hull he tried unsuccessfully to persuade Hotham to surrender York to the King.

Sir John Hotham fought on the continent of Europe during the early part of the Thirty Years ' War.

The younger Hotham was beheaded on 2 January 1645, and in spite of efforts made by the House of Lords and the Presbyterians to save him, the elder suffered the same fate on the following day.

Starting in 1963, with the founding of the journal American Haiku, poets such as Cor van den Heuvel, Nick Virgilio, Raymond Roseliep, John Wills, Anita Virgil, Gary Hotham, Marlene Mountain, Wally Swist, Peggy Willis Lyles, George Swede, vincent tripi, Jim Kacian, and others have created significant oeuvres of haiku poetry, evincing continuities with both Transcendentalism and Imagism and often maintaining an anti-anthropocentric environmental focus on nature during an unparalleled age of habitat destruction and human alienation.

The East St Kilda Uniting Church, on the corner of Hotham and Inkerman Streets, was built in 1887, to the design of architect Hillson Beasley.

After this Graves continued to be employed in command of other tenders in the neighbourhood of Boston and Rhode Island till, on the recall of his uncle, he rejoined Preston and returned to England ; but was again sent out to the North American station in the same ship, commanded by Commodore William Hotham.

Beaumont, who was a baron of the exchequer for thirty years, died on 4 March 1814, and was succeeded as 3rd baron by his grandson Beaumont Hotham ( 1794 – 1870 ), who was present at the Battle of Waterloo, being afterwards a member of parliament for forty-eight years.

Sir Richard Hotham ( 5 October 1722 – 13 March 1799 ) was an English eighteenth century property developer and politician who rose from humble origins to a position of some power and influence.

Sir Richard Hotham died at Bognor in March 1799 and was buried at the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene at South Bersted, where to this day there is an annual wreath laying ceremony at his grave.

Clement Hodgkinson, as Victorian Assistant-Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey ( 1861-74 ), was responsible for the government subdivisions of Carlton ( 1860 ), North Carlton, North Fitzroy and Clifton Hill ( 1865-9 ), Hotham Hill ( 1866 ), South and North Parkville ( 1868-9 ).

They had risen from humble beginnings by their own diligence and astuteness, they were unfettered by the codes that bound nobles like Othon or even the older generation of clerks like Hotham, and they were working for an end that their opponents had never even visualized.

On Victoria obtaining responsible government in May 1855, the title of the then incumbent Lieutenant-Governor, Captain Sir Charles Hotham, became Governor.

The football world assumed that the amalgamation was the death knell of the club, but they underestimated the spirit of the “ founding fathers ” and the local community who dug deep and came up with the funds to re-establish the club under the new name of “ Hotham ” in early 1877.

Hotham were prime movers in establishing this league and were afforded a place in light of their previous contributions to Australian Football.

In 1882, the club amalgamated with the Hotham Cricket Club and moved into the North Melbourne Recreation Reserve ( Arden St Oval ) which has remained as the home of the club up until this day.

The joint venture was aimed at affecting improvements at the Hotham Cricket Ground, which was the name of the Reserve at the time.

Four years later the club adopted the traditional uniform of blue and white vertical stripes at the insistence of the VFA, who wanted a visible contrast between Geelong's and Hotham ’ s uniforms.

This followed the name of the local area reverting from Hotham to North Melbourne.

Hotham also found itself well represented at the first ever inter-colonial game in 1879 with four players from the club gaining selection for Victoria.

Grazing was also removed from Mounts Feathertop, Hotham and Bogong around this time, from around Mount Howitt in the 1980s, and from the northern Bogong High Plains, the Bluff and part of Davies Plains in the early 1990s, leaving about one third of the Alpine National Park – over 200, 000 hectares – available for grazing.

Mount Hotham and Falls Creek are ski resorts adjacent to the national park from where back-country skiers journey into the park to areas such as the Bogong High Plains and Mount Bogong.

Victoria has a number of well developed ski resorts including Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller.

The first winter traverse of the Victorian Alps was made in 1900, via the Hospice and Mount Hotham.

A stone cottage was built at Mount Hotham in 1925 to cater for a growing interest in sport of skiing and a Club was built in 1944 with the first ski tow installed in 1951.

Major alpine skiing resorts include Thredbo, Perisher and Charlotte Pass in New South Wales ; Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller in Victoria and Mount Ben Lomond in Tasmania.

Sir Hugh Cholmley sold Fyling Hall in 1634 to Sir John Hotham whose descendants held the estate including the hall and mill until the 18th century.

At the 1990 election, Crean was elected to the seat of Hotham in the Australian House of Representatives, and immediately entered the Hawke ministry as Minister for Science and Technology.
