* February 17 – The uninhabited Lord Howe Island is discovered by the brig HMS Supply, commanded by Lieutenant Ball, who is on his way from Botany Bay to Norfolk Island with convicts to start a penal settlement there.

When the Northern Pacific Railway's transcontinental rail line arrived in 1881, the town was renamed for Alfred Howe Terry, a General in the Union Army who commanded an 1876 expedition in connection with George Armstrong Custer ’ s campaign against Native Americans, specifically in the west.

They lost 50 percent of the force commanded by General Howe, that were killed or wounded.

He was then appointed to HMS Blenheim of 90 guns, and commanded her during the year in the Grand Fleet under Howe, at the relief of Gibraltar in October, and the encounter with the allied fleet off Cape Spartel.

He therefore ordered the battleships HMS Howe and HMS King George V and their six escorting destroyers, commanded by Vice Admiral Arthur Power, to leave their base in Malta and join the flotilla.

Concerned that General Howe was sailing directly to New York, Washington hurried regiments from Boston, including General Israel Putnam, who commanded the troops until Washington himself arrived in mid-April.

Permanent settlement on Lord Howe was established in June 1834 when the British whaling barque Caroline, sailing from New Zealand and commanded by Captain John Blinkenthorpe, landed at what is now known as Blinky Beach.

Many historians have credited Lord Howe with the creation of light infantry, and have called the 55th Regiment as light infantry regiment, however that was not the case.

Howe had eventually reached his breaking point and in late 1834 wrote in the Novascotian that he was going to start a campaign in the interest of bringing to light the wrongful actions of government.

The western pincer, under the command of Barry St. Leger, was repulsed when the Siege of Fort Stanwix failed, and the southern pincer, which was to progress up the Hudson valley from New York City, never started since General William Howe decided instead to capture Philadelphia.

On October 22 of that year, in what is known as the Battle of Red Bank, an attack by 900 Hessian troops, serving under British Major General William Howe, who then occupied Philadelphia, was repelled, with heavy losses on the Hessian side ( including the death of their commander, Colonel Carl Emil Kurt von Donop ) by the 600 Continental defenders under Colonel Christopher Greene.

When the Americans asked the admiral to leave his fleet in Narragansett Bay, d ' Estaing refused and attacked the British under Lord Howe.

In late July 1777, after a distressing 34-day journey from Sandy Hook on the coast of New Jersey, a Royal Navy fleet of more than 260 ships carrying some 17, 000 British troops under the command of British General Sir William Howe landed at the head of the Elk River, on the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay near present-day Elkton, Maryland ( then known as Head of Elk ), approximately 40 – 50 miles ( 60 – 80 km ) southwest of Philadelphia.

The plan, largely of his own creation, was for Burgoyne and his force to cross Lake Champlain from Quebec and capture Ticonderoga before advancing on Albany, New York, where they would rendezvous with another British army under General Howe coming north from New York City, and a smaller force that would come down the Mohawk River valley under Barry St. Leger.

Underlining the plan was the belief that Burgoyne's aggressive thrust from Quebec would be aided by the movements of two other large British forces under Generals Howe and Clinton who would support the advance.

( Henry Clinton was given a knighthood as consolation, but otherwise he was ordered to continue serving under General Howe, with whom he did not get along well.

This uncertainty is highlighted by a letter sent by Germain to Howe, dated April 2, 1777, in which he approved Howe's plan for Philadelphia, but also stressed that " it will be executed in time for you to co-operate with the army ordered to proceed from Canada and put itself under your command.

In 1782 he hoisted his flag on HMS Royal George, which formed part of the fleet under Lord Howe.

A few days later it was learned that General Howe was planning an attack upon the American camp.

`` They straggle at such a rate '', he told the commander-in-chief, `` that if the enemy were enterprising, they might get two from us, when we would take one of them, which makes me wish General Howe would go on, lest any incident happen to us ''.

" In August 1777, General Sir William Howe led a British army through Delaware on his way to a victory at the Battle of Brandywine and capture of the city of Philadelphia.

In August 1776, British General William Howe launched a massive naval and land campaign designed to seize New York.

General Howe in New York took his army south to Philadelphia instead of going up the Hudson River to join with Burgoyne near Albany.
