* June 5 – The Council of Constance condemns the writings of John Wycliffe and asks Jan Hus to recant in public his heresy ; after his denial, he is tried for heresy, excommunicated, then sentenced to be burned at the stake.

Hus was executed, but his preaching and writings were instrumental in the formation of the Hussite movement.

Soon after Hus assumed office, German professors of theology demanded the condemnation of Wycliffe's writings.

However, this in globo formula for censure had already been employed by the earlier Council of Constance to condemn various propositions extracted from the writings of Jan Hus.

The Council also condemned and executed Jan Hus and ruled on issues of national sovereignty, the rights of pagans, and just war in response to a conflict between the Kingdom of Poland and the Order of the Teutonic Knights.

Jan Hus, summoned to Constance under a letter of indemnity, was condemned by council and burned at the stake notwithstanding on 6 July 1415.

After the Council of Constance lured Jan Hus in with a letter of indemnity, then tried him for heresy and put him to death at the stake on 6 July 1415, the Hussites fought the Hussite Wars ( 1420 – 1434 ) for their religious and political cause.

At his trial in 1415, Jan Hus argued that the Church does not necessarily need a Pope, because, during the Pontificate of " Pope Agnes " ( as he also called her ), it got on quite well.

In 1414 – 1418 the Council of Constance took place, during which, on 6 July 1415, John Hus ( Czech religious thinker, philosopher and reformer ), who was seen as a threat to Christianity by the Roman Catholic Church, was burned at the stake.

He played a leading part in the discussions leading to the deposition of Antipope John XXIII on 29 May 1415, but was less concerned with the trials of Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague.

The knights and nobles of Bohemia and Moravia, who were in favour of church reform, sent a protest to the Council of Constance on 2 September 1415, known as the protestatio Bohemorum, which condemned the execution of Hus in the strongest language.

Internal troubles prevented the followers of Hus from fully capitalising on their victory.

The changes brought on by the Renaissance eventually led to the Protestant Reformation during which the Protestant Lutheran and the Reformed followers of Calvin, Hus, Zwingli, Melancthon, Knox, and others split from the Roman Catholic Church.

The university was modelled on the University of Prague, from which the German-speaking faculty members withdrew to Leipzig after the Jan Hus crisis and the Decree of Kutná Hora.

Nevertheless, on the eighth of November four decrees were published, all of them directed against easy targets: against the followers of the heretical reformers, Jan Hus, recently burnt at the stake at the Council of Constance, safe conduct or no, and against the English followers of John Wyclif, who claimed that the highest authority was the Bible ; against the followers of the schismatic Antipope Benedict XIII ; a decree postponing the negotiations with the Greeks and other Eastern Orthodox churches ( which were later worked into acceptable compromises in the long working sessions of the Council of Florence, 1438 to 1445 ); and a decree advising greater vigilance against heresy, the easiest target of all.

According to some Protestant sources the figure of St. John Nepomuk is a legend due to Jesuits and its historical kernel is really Jan Hus, who was metamorphosed from a Bohemian Reformer into a Roman Catholic saint: the Nepomuk story would be based on Wenceslaus Hajek's blending of the Jan who was drowned in 1393 and the Jan who was burned in 1415.

When, on 11 October 1414, Hus left for the Council of Constance, Jerome assured him that if needed, he would come to his assistance, contrary to the wishes of Hus.

The words put into his mouth on these occasions made him renounce both Wyclif and Hus.
