Shortly after beginning her studies there, she visited London with Vladimir, who spent time with his colleagues Thomas Huxley and Charles Darwin, while she was invited to attend George Eliot's Sunday salons.

Before taking up the post of Assistant Professor at the Rice Institute, Huxley spent a year in Germany preparing for his demanding new job.

In 1935 Huxley was appointed Secretary to the Zoological Society of London, and spent much of the next seven years running the society and its zoological gardens, the London Zoo and Whipsnade Park, alongside his writing and research.

Aldous Huxley spent some time here before he wrote Crome Yellow, a book which contains a ridiculous character obviously intended as a caricature of Lady Ottoline Morrell ; she never forgave him.

Darwin had to admit that Krause had revised his essay, and spent a week in February 1880 drafting responses, then was persuaded to ignore the dispute, writing to Huxley " I feel like a man condemned to be hung who has just got a reprieve ".

Many of the proponents of Darwinism at that time, including Huxley, had reservations about the significance of natural selection, and Darwin himself gave credence to what was later called Lamarckism.

The following year, Wells won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science ( later the Royal College of Science in South Kensington, now part of Imperial College London ) in London, studying biology under Thomas Henry Huxley.

Osmond later said he had a photo of the day that showed Huxley wearing flannels.

A year later, buoyed by excellent results and a silver medal prize in the Apothecaries ' yearly competition, Huxley was admitted to study at Charing Cross Hospital, where he obtained a small scholarship.

No doubt remembering this, and of course knowing his merit, later in life Huxley organized a pension for his old tutor.

In 1941 Huxley was invited to the United States on a lecturing tour, and generated some controversy by saying that he thought the United States should join World War II: a few weeks later came the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Spencer himself introduced the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley, who would later win fame as ' Darwin's Bulldog ' and who remained his lifelong friend.

The same subject was revisited about a century later in the book-length essay, The Devils of Loudun, by Aldous Huxley, published in 1952.

Thomas Huxley later referred to it as the " physical basis of life " and considered that the property of life resulted from the distribution of molecules within this substance.

About 40 years later, Hodgkin & Huxley developed the voltage clamp and created the first biophysical model of the action potential.

Two years later, Osborn took a special course of study in anatomy in the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Bellevue Medical School of New York under Dr. William H. Welch, and subsequently studied embryology under Thomas Huxley as well as Francis Maitland Balfour at Cambridge University, England.

In 1835, he developed a phylogeny for the birds based on the muscles of the hip and leg that contributed to later work by Thomas Huxley.

Though later associated with Mendelian genetics, mutationism began in the 1890s ( prior to the rediscovery of Mendel ’ s laws ) with the studies of Hugo De Vries and William Bateson on naturally occurring discontinuous variations ; their thoughts concerning the role of discontinuity in evolution drew on earlier ideas of William Keith Brooks, Francis Galton, and Thomas Henry Huxley.

The findings backed up the argument which later involved into the theory of global origin of human species that was awarded by the Thomas Henry Huxley Award in 1927.

The fundamental properties of currents mediated by ion channels were analyzed by the British biophysicists Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley as part of their Nobel Prize-winning research on the action potential, published in 1952.

Zaehner criticises what he sees as Huxley ’ s apparent call for all religious people to use drugs ( including alcohol ) as part of their practices.

" At various times the text refers to " Sir Roderick Murchison, Professor ( Richard ) Owen, Professor ( Thomas Henry ) Huxley, ( and ) Mr. Darwin ", and thus they become explicitly part of the story.

In 1929, after finishing work on The Science of Life, Huxley visited East Africa to advise the Colonial Office on education in British East Africa ( for the most part Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika ).

As the 1930s started, Huxley travelled widely and took part in a variety of activities which were partly scientific and partly political.

Huxley wrote that " There is no separate supernatural realm: all phenomena are part of one natural process of evolution.

He also dealt with the condemnation of Pope Honorius I, carried on a controversial correspondence with John Stuart Mill, and took a leading part in the discussions of the Metaphysical Society, founded by James Knowles, of which Alfred Lord Tennyson, T H Huxley and James Martineau were also prominent members.

Huxley in his book The Devils of Loudun ( 1952 ) and in the Ken Russell film version of the Huxley book ( 1971 ) alleged that the initial accusations against Grandier by the nuns of the convent of Loudun were part of a case of collective hysteria.

Though not nearly so prominent as Huxley in controversy over philosophical problems, Tyndall played his part in communicating to the educated public what he thought were the virtues of having a clear separation between science ( knowledge & rationality ) and religion ( faith & spirituality ).

However with the support of T. H. Huxley it was created under Biology section D in 1866, and in 1869, Section E dropped the " Ethnology " part of its title.

In due course, Collier became an integral part of the family of Thomas Henry Huxley PC, President of the Royal Society from 1883 to 1885.

In 1974 a part of the museum that was once known as the Huxley Building was renamed the Henry Cole Building ; today it forms the Henry Cole Wing of the V & A.

As Huxley said in his Advertisement of the Reader, most of the content of his book had been presented to the public before: " The greater part of the following essays has already been published in the form of Oral Discourses, addressed to widely different audiences, during the past three years.

The publication of Huxley physiography presented a new form of geography that analysed and classified cause and effect at the micro-level and then applied these to the macro-scale ( due to the view that the micro was part of the macro and thus an understanding of all the micro-scales was need to understand the macro level ).
