After the year's previous success, King had Brown sign a new recording contract and in June 1965, released " Papa's Got a Brand New Bag ", which became his breakthrough hit single, becoming his first # 1 single on the R & B chart since " Try Me " and his first Top 10 pop single winning Brown his first Grammy.

Later in 1965, King released the uptempo rock ' n ' roll song, " I Got You ( I Feel Good )", which reached # 11 on the R & B chart in late 1965 and again reached the Top 10 on the pop chart in early 1966 peaking at # 3.

After his stint in prison during the late 1980s, Brown returned with the album, Love Overdue, in 1991, which included the single, "( So Tired Of Standing Still We Got To ) Move On ", which peaked at # 48 on the R & B chart.

She created hits with the songs " Got a Hold on Me " ( Top 10 pop and # 1 adult contemporary ) and " Love Will Show Us How " (# 30 ).

The band released numerous top ten singles in North America during the mid-and late-1960s, including the # 1 hits " Good Lovin '" ( 1966 ), " Groovin '" ( 1967 ), and " People Got to Be Free " ( 1968 ), as well as A Beautiful Morning (# 3 1968 ) and the lesser-known A Girl Like You.

The same year, " People Got to Be Free ", a horn-punctuated plea for racial tolerance ( the band was known for refusing to tour on segregated bills ) in the wake of the assassinations that year of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., became their third and final U. S. # 1 single, and their sixth and final Canadian # 1.

While Nelson preferred rockabilly and uptempo rock songs like " Believe What You Say " ( Hot 100 # 4 ), " I Got a Feeling " (# 10 ), " My Bucket's Got a Hole in It " (# 12 ), " Hello Mary Lou " (# 9 ), " It's Late " (# 9 ), " Stood Up " (# 2 ), " Waitin ' in School " (# 18 ), " Be-Bop Baby " (# 3 ), and " Just a Little Too Much " (# 9 ), his smooth, calm voice made him a natural to sing ballads.

During the 55 years that he performed professionally, Burke released 38 studio albums on more than 17 record labels and had 35 songs that charted, including 26 songs that made the Billboard R & B charts, including " Got to Get You Off My Mind " that was # 1 in the summer of the 1965, and an additional 9 songs that were only listed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including 1964's seminal “ Everybody Needs Somebody to Love ”.

Burke had over 30 songs make the Cash Box R & B charts, with " Got to Get You Off My Mind " reaching # 1, and 23 that charted on their pop chart hits, with seven making Cash Boxs Top 40.

These included six Top Ten R & B hits, four of which crossed over to the pop Top Forty: " Cry to Me " (# 5 R & B ), " Just Out of Reach ( Of My Two Open Arms )" (# 7 R & B, # 24 pop ), " Got to Get You Off of My Mind " (# 1 R & B, # 22 pop ), " You ’ re Good for Me " (# 8 R & B ), " Tonight ’ s the Night " (# 2 R & B, # 28 pop ) and " If You Need Me " (# 2 R & B, # 37 pop ).

On January 22, 1965 Burke recorded four songs at Atlantic's New York studio, including his " signature single ", and his biggest hit (# 1 R & B, # 22 pop ), " Got to Get You Off My Mind " ( Atlantic 2276 ), which the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would later call " one of the premier soul hits of the 1960s.
