In some states a form of separation is provided to certain aircraft in uncontrolled airspace as far as is practical ( often known under ICAO as an advisory service in class G airspace ), but separation is not mandated nor widely provided.

The FAA does not use the ICAO categories for wake turbulence separation, instead using the following:

* Separation of flows: the first airport in Colombia have separation of flows according to the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO.

Generally speaking, the ICAO airspaces allocate the responsibility for avoiding other aircraft, namely either to ATC ( if separation is provided ) or to the aircraft commander ( if not ).

* Approach minima: ICAO CAT 1 Decision Height 60 m ( 200 ft ) / 800 m ( Visibility ) or 550 m RVR

ICAO recommends the VMC minima internationally ; they are defined in national regulations, which rarely significantly vary from ICAO.

Each country should have an accessible Aeronautical Information Publication ( AIP ), based on standards defined by the ICAO, containing information essential to air navigation.

The ICAO code is based on the region and country of the airport — for example, Charles de Gaulle Airport has an ICAO code of LFPG, where L indicates Southern Europe, F, France, PG, Paris de Gaulle, while Orly Airport has the code LFPO ( the 3rd letter sometimes refers to the particular flight information region ( FIR ) or the last two may be arbitrary ).

As of November 2011, there are 191 ICAO members, consisting of 190 of the 193 UN members ( all but Dominica, Liechtenstein, and Tuvalu ), plus the Cook Islands.

In most of the world, the ICAO and IATA codes are unrelated ; for example, Charles de Gaulle Airport has an IATA code of CDG and Orly, ORY.

However, the location prefix for continental United States is K and the ICAO codes are usually the IATA code with this prefix — for example, the ICAO code for LAX is KLAX.

( In contrast, airports in Hawaii are in the Pacific region and so have ICAO codes that start with PH ; Kona International Airport's code is PHKO.

ICAO Codes for Niger are prefixed " DR ".

* UK are the first two letters indicating the ICAO code of the airports, airfields or air bases of Ukraine

Airports are uniquely represented by their IATA airport code and ICAO airport code.

Although genus types with vertical extent are often considered a single family, the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ) further distinguishes towering vertical clouds as a separate group by specifying that these very large cumuliform and cumulonimbiform types must be identified by their standard names or abbreviations in all aviation observations ( METARS ) and forecasts ( TAFS ) to warn pilots of possible severe weather and turbulance.
