Il Redentore was built as a votive church in thanksgiving for deliverance from a major outbreak of the plague that decimated Venice between 1575 and 1576, in which some 46, 000 people ( 25 – 30 % of the population ) died.

Il Redentore has one of the most prominent sites of any of Palladio's structures, and is considered one of the pinnacles of his career.

The second official DVD release of Il Divo, this contains the full live concert performed on 27 June 2006 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, California as part of their World Tour 2006.

In the romance of Il Guerrin Meschino, written by Andrea da Barberino about 1410, the central episode of the sixth part ( Canto V ) contains the " prodigious adventures " of Guerrino with this enchantress, the " Fata " Alcina, whom he seeks out, against all advice.

His last published volume contains a series of sonnets of singular beauty, addressed to the river, resembling Wordsworth's " Sonnets to the Duddon ," but more perfect in form ; and a blank verse idyll, " Il Pettirosso " (" The Redbreast "), bearing an equally strong, though equally accidental, resemblance to the similar compositions of Coleridge.

Puccini's Madama Butterfly also contains a number ( Il Cannone Del Porto ) often known as the Flower Duet.

Il Decameron a year later was also praised ; both paintings are academic compositions in the style of Raphael.

Occasional literary references point to the novel and, naturally the classics and we know of family visits especially with Madame Pisani ( of whom he appears to have been extraordinarily fond ) " to view the paintings " He was, presumably, culturally no different to any other highly educated European gentleman. Invitations are to be found among the papers in the Royal Irish Academy-to M.
