Philip had earlier been Duke of Touraine ( 1359 – 1363 ), and became later also Count of Charolais ( 1390 – 1404 ).

The county of Charolais was acquired by Philip II, Duke of Burgundy in 1390.

Building commenced, after 1390, by Sir Philip Courtenay ( d. 1406 ), the 5th or 6th son of Hugh Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon ( d. 1377 ).

In 1390, Bayezid took as a wife Princess Olivera Despina, the daughter of Prince Lazar of Serbia, who also lost his life in Kosovo.
