The title Romanorum Rex became functionally obsolete after 1508, when, after King Maximilian I failed in a good-faith attempt to journey to Rome, the Pope permitted him to use the title of Electus Romanorum Imperator (" elected Emperor of the Romans ").

John Penny ( died 1520 ) was an English priest, successively Bishop of Bangor, 1504 – 1508, and Bishop of Carlisle, 1508 – 1520.

Thomas Chard, alias Tyblis, the last Abbot, was Suffragan Bishop to the Bishop of Exeter from 1508 and was appointed Vicar of Thorncombe in 1529, 10 years before he left Forde Abbey at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.
