On 7 September 1533 he married Catherine Willoughby, 12th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby ( 1 April 1520 – 19 September 1580 ); after widowing she remarried Richard Bertie.

Unsubstantiated anecdotes suggest that this watermark was introduced to England in 1580 by Sir John Spielmann, a German who established a papermill at Dartford, Kent.

Wollaton Hall was built between 1580 and 1588 for Sir Francis Willoughby and is believed to be designed by the Elizabethan architect, Robert Smythson, who was the architect of Hardwick Hall.
