* William Branch Giles, ( 1762 – 1830 ), born in Amelia County, United States Congressman, United States Senator, and Governor of Virginia.

* Montford Stokes ( 1762 – 1842 ), United States Senator, Governor of North Carolina ( 1816 – 1832 ), appointed by President Andrew Jackson to lead the Federal Indian Commission in what is now Oklahoma ; he is believed to be the only veteran of the Revolutionary War buried in that state.

First granted in 1762 by New Hampshire's Colonial Governor, Benning Wentworth, the territory was named Dryden, after English poet and playwright, John Dryden.
