In 1806, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1799 to 1803 removed the large collection of marble sculptures from the Parthenon, on the Acropolis in Athens and transferred them to the UK.

At the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt on October 14, 1806 – when Napoleon invaded Prussia and defeated the massed Prussian-Saxon army commanded by Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick – he was captured, one of the 25, 000 prisoners captured that day as the Prussian army disintegrated.

The town was home to the civil engineer and calculating prodigy George Parker Bidder ( 1806 – 1878 ), who is notable for his work on railways over much of the world, as well as the docks of the East End in the Port of London.

In the Capitulation of Erfurt the city, its 12, 000 defenders, and the Petersberg fortress were handed over to the French on 16 October 1806.

At this point, he felt his position as Holy Roman Emperor to be untenable, so on 6 August 1806, he abdicated the throne and declared himself to be Francis I, Emperor of Austria.

William Pitt the Younger, who made it his home for twenty years — longer than any First Lord before or since — from 1783 to 1801 and from 1804 to 1806, referred to it as " My vast, awkward house.

He was, however, tried in the court of King's Bench before Lord Ellenborough in 1806 on a single charge ; the misdemeanor of having in 1801 caused torture to be unlawfully inflicted to extract a confession from Luisa Calderon, a young free mulatto girl suspected of assisting one of her lovers to burgle the house of the man with whom she was living, making off with about £ 500.

In 1806, Grey, by then Lord Howick owing to his father's elevation to the peerage as Earl Grey, became a part of the Ministry of All the Talents ( a coalition of Foxite Whigs, Grenvillites, and Addingtonites ) as First Lord of the Admiralty.

He served in Pitt's final Cabinet as Lord President of the Council to 1806, and in the Ministry of All the Talents as Lord Privy Seal and again Lord President to 1807.

Following Pitt's death in 1806, Grenville became the head of the " Ministry of All the Talents ", a coalition between Grenville's supporters, the Foxite Whigs, and the supporters of former Prime Minister Lord Sidmouth, with Grenville as First Lord of the Treasury and Fox as Foreign Secretary as joint leaders.

He continued to serve in the cabinet until Pitt's death in 1806 — from 1801 to 1805 as Lord President of the Council and then as a Minister without Portfolio.
