The First Picture of Yosemite Valley by Thomas Ayres, 1855

James Hutchings — who organized the first tourist party to the Valley in 1855 — and artist Thomas Ayers generated much of the earliest publicity about Yosemite, creating articles and entire magazine issues about the Valley.

In 1855, the Leonowens family moved to Lynton, a remote convict depot north of Geraldton where Thomas was appointed the Commissariat Storekeeper and Anna gave birth to their son Louis there.

Johnson County is named for Thomas Johnson, and was one of the first counties established in the Kansas Territory in 1855.

* 1853: the first lodge in America of the ancient Welsh fraternal order of Ivorites was opened in Carbondale in the fall of 1853 ; the first public Ivorite celebration in America took place in Carbondale in August 1855, when a procession and other public exercises took place, under the direction of Thomas Voyle, Esquire, chief marshal, and Edward Roberts, Esquire.

His father's elder brother, Sir Thomas Liddell, 6th Baronet ( 1775 – 1855 ), was raised to the Peerage as Baron Ravensworth in 1821.

Thomas Cubitt ( 1788 – 1855 ), born Buxton, Norfolk, was the leading master builder in London in the second quarter of the 19th century, and also carried out several projects in other parts of England.

( The German publisher Breitkopf and Härtel, the world's oldest music publishing house, issued Perkins's Piano Trio and two string quartets in 1854 and 1855 respectively ; Perkins's compositions were the first works by an American ever published by that firm.
